Third Person’s POV

“Daphne, if they really wanted to take you away, they wouldn't be visiting with gifts at night,” Aldrich said from

his chair. “They would've cduring the day with the Capital Guard.”

Daphne's eyes widened. “Oh!” she said, finally looking at Adelaide.

“Gamma Adelaide, you're an inspiration to all of us women! | wish I could be like you... Ah, never mind. It’s too

much work. I'd rather just eat, drink, and have fun. It’s much more comfortable.”

Adelaide laughed at her honesty.

She turned to Aldrich. “I can’t believe you found such a gem here. Having her around must make you so happy.”

Aldrich waved a hand in mock annoyance, but a smile was on his face.

“A gem? She's just a waste of food! Can't sing,

‘t dance, and thinks I'm old.”

He pretended to be annoyed, but his voice was full of laughter. Anyone could see how much he doted on

Daphne.

After a few jokes, Daphne got serious. “My father senthere. He said since Aldrich lives alone and his children

aren't around, if | could get him to like me, he’d listen to whatever | said.”

She looked at Aldrich. “But the first day | met you, | thought you were so old. And you don’t even like to use

mouthwash. How could | take care of you up close? So | wanted you to kickout. | was hoping to make you

mad enough to banishfrom the capital so | could escape.”

“But you wouldn't do it. Instead, you gavefive or six meals a day. You never madedo anything else. You

just askedto listen to music with you sometimes. When we weren't listening to music, | could do whatever |

wanted. You never interfered. It's been so comfortable and free.”

Adelaide couldn't help but ask, “What about your mother? Aren't you worried about her?”

Daphne shrugged, her voice calm. “What's the point of worrying? | can’t save her. So | might as well live my own

life and let her worry less about me.”

She found a seat and sat down. “I’ve known since | was a child that my father would send me

away eventually. My mom toldto just get by if | could, and not to force myself if | couldn’t. She even said it

was okay to end my life.”

The words were hard to hear, but Daphne smiled as she spoke. “But my mom said that, and she never did it

herself. Her life was so hard, but she still couldn't bring herself to end it.”

“When | first got here, | thought about fighting back. But now that my life is so good, | don’t want to run away

anymore. | can just enjoy myself every day.”

She chuckled, her eyes filled with contentment. “It looks like | don’t have to leave for now. | get to enjoy this

good life a little longer.”

Aldrich laughed along with her, his eyes soft with a grandfather's affection. He looked at her as if she were one

of his own grandchildren.

After they left Aldrich’s estate, Adelaide felt a little better.

The victims at Madison's estate were a heavy weight on her heart.

She was so aware of why those breeders were taken there and the horrible things Madison had done to them.

It was awful to see those abused she-wolves-their eyes vacant, jumping at the slightest sound.

It was heartbreaking.

Daphne was a small comfort, but just a small one.

It was like a bubble: beautiful and shimmering in the light, but when it popped, all that was left was a suffocating

darkness.

The night wind was cold. Lance held Adelaide close, and neither of them said anything.

They were both deep in thought, and what they were thinking was the sthing-the investigation into Madison

was a heavy blow. It had pushed back Germain’s attempts to make a

move.

He was probably trying to figure out how to leave the capital now.

But he couldn't leave yet. Pandora was still sick, and the treason case was still open.

Lycan Erasmus’s decision not to close the case was smart.

As long as the case was open and Madison was alive, Germain would be on edge.

They looked at each other and smiled. It seemed they were getting more in sync now that they were mated.
