Jessica wasn’t the only one worried. Rebecca had been anxious too.

During that month they spent apart, every night before Rebecca went to sleep, she'd worry that bad news was
waiting for her the next inorning. But she was always so worn out from the day that before she could dwell on it,
sleep would take over and the worries vanished.
More than anyone, Rebecca hoped Jeffrey would keep his promise this time.
But deep down, she knew his behavior wasn’t just about breaking promises-it was a psychological issue she
couldn't ignore.
“My mom wantsto meet an important business partner tomorrow, so | probably won't have tto go back
to Jelasburg with you,” Jessica said. “Wantto have that jerk lan go with you?”
Rebecca shook her head. “No, Mark’s good enough.”
Jessica nodded. “Alright, your bodyguard’s pretty reliable.”
“Yeah,” Rebecca replied, glancing out the window. She couldn't see Mark from here, but she could totally picture
him-always super careful, doing his job like a pro.
“Rebecca,” Jessica called out.
“Yeah?” Rebecca answered.
“Good luck tomorrow! Hope everything goes great,” Jessica said warmly.
“Okay,” Rebecca replied softly.
After their chat, they hung up.
Staring at the date she’d just crossed off on her desk, Rebecca weighed her options for a long tbefore finally
making up her mind and heading over to Samuel's play area. No matter how hard it was, she knew she needed
to tell him that she and Jeffrey were getting divorced tomorrow.
She hung out and played with him there for about half an hour.
While Rebecca was still racking her brain about how to tell him without making it weird, Samuel suddenly looked
up from his puzzle and said, “Mommy, is there something you want to talk toabout?”
Rebecca blinked in surprise. “How did you figure that out?”
“You've glanced over atlike, twenty times in the past half hour,” Samuel piped up, his voice innocent and a
little mischievous. “That's not normal for you.”
‘Honestly, lan called it,” Rebecca thought to herself.
‘My little Samuel really was born to be a detective, she marveled inwardly.

Chapter 253
“Are you and Dad getting divorced?” Samuel asked, his face totally straight, like it was just another casual
question.
Rebecca froze for a second.
He actually figured it out? Rebecca thought in shock.

“You always telleverything right away-except for this. | can see you keep holding back,” Samuel said,
looking a little smug after catching her being surprised. “Plus, Dad hasn't been around for a month. Even if you
guys argued, he would have stopped by unless it was something serious.”

‘Even when Dad and Mommy argued, he'd always find sexcuse to cover, Samuel thought to himself.
‘If he hasn't shown up for an entire month, this must be the real reason,’ Samuel deduced, a little sadness
flickering inside.
“Tomorrow, I'm heading back to Jelasburg with your dad to the courthouse,” Rebecca said, her gaze never
leaving Samuel. She tried to sound calm, but she couldn’t hide the worry bubbling inside. “After that, it'll really
be just the two of us.”
Samuel just nodded, totally unfazed. “Okay.”
Rebecca bit her lip and reached out, her voice gentle. “If you ever want to talk or if something's bothering you,
tell Mommy, alright? Don’t hold it in by yourself.”
Samuel took his tto think it over.
He stayed silent for quite a while, quietly fiddling with his blocks.
Then, after a long pause, he finally looked up and asked, “So after you and Dad get divorced, can I still go hang
out with him?”
“Of course you can,” Rebecca assured him softly. “No matter what's going on betweenand your dad, he'll
always be your father.”
“Okay, that’s all | wanted to know. You guys can get divorced,” Samuel replied, just shrugging it off and returning
to his building blocks like he didn’t have a care in the world.
Rebecca paused for a moment.
Samuel had always been more mature than other kids his age, so Rebecca started to wonder if he honestly felt.
like it was no big deal, or if he was just putting on a brave face so she wouldn't worry.
“Whether you guys are together or not, you'll still lovejust the same,” Samuel said, sounding way too
grown-up for his age. Rebecca couldn't help marveling at how mature he was about it. “I'm not losing anything.”
‘The one who's really losing out is Dad, Samuel thought to himself.

Rebecca wrapped her arms around him, holding Samuel close. For the first tin ages, she felt sof that
heaviness in her chest melt away. ‘Maybe things really will be okay, she thought, relief washing over her as she
squeezed her son just a little tighter.
That night, just as Rebecca was about to fall asleep, her phone buzzed with a message from Jeffrey: [Text me
when you get to the airport tomorrow. I'll have Gregory pick you up and take you to the courthouse.]
Rebecca: [Okay.]
Jeffrey stared at her one-word reply, his eyes turning cold as he imagined Rebecca’s closed-off look while she
typed it-like she couldn’t care less anymore.
Gregory hovered at his side. “Mr. Hanson?”
“Speak.” Jeffrey said, not looking up.
“Ms. Jensen is landing in Jelasburg at 8:20 tomorrow. She'll get to the courthouse a little after nine,” Gregory
reported. “Maybe you should try to get ssleep now-so you'll look more refreshed when you meet her.”
“Who told you to check up on her?” Jeffrey's voice was cold—he’d given Rebecca his word, and he wasn’t about
to stalk her in secret, no matter what.
“Nobody. | did it myself,” Gregory replied.
“Don’t let this happen again,” Jeffrey said, his tone final.
“Got it,” Gregory said.
Gregory said all the right things, but in his heart, he still wasn’t ready to quit.
Jeffrey had made a promise to stay out of Rebecca’s life and not look into her affairs, but no matter what he said,
Gregory was going to keep an eye on her anyway—and Jeffrey couldn't really stop him.
Jeffrey set his phone down and dove back into work.
“Aren’t you going to take a break?” Gregory asked, noticing how tired Jeffrey looked.
Instead of answering, Jeffrey cut in with a question of his own, “Is the place | told you to get ready all set?”
“All taken care of-it’s just a ten-minute drive from the office,” Gregory assured him, ever reliable. “I've already
moved all your living essentials in.”
Jeffrey paused, his pen hovering over the paper.
Gregory noticed and explained quickly, thinking Jeffrey minded the distance. “If | picked somewhere closer,
they're just generic apartments-really crowded, not much space, too many people around.”
“Head back early. And tomorrow, remember to pick up Rebecca,” Jeffrey said, not offering anything more, just
giving the order.

The cost of all that stubbornness? By six in the morning, his body finally crashed, and he was rushed straight to
the hospital.
At 8:20 in the morning, Rebecca and Mark showed up at the airport right on schedule to meet Gregory.
Gregory greeted her as politely as ever, “Ms. Jensen.”
Rebecca answered with a simple “Mm.”
She and Mark got in the car together.
After about five minutes on the road, Rebecca finally asked, “Are we heading straight to the courthouse, or are
we supposed to pick up Jeffrey first?”
Gregory stiffened a little, his grip on the steering wheel tightening without him even noticing.
Mark, sitting up front, caught it immediately. “Ms. Jensen, he looks nervous-like he’s hiding something.”
A flicker of confusion crossed Rebecca's eyes.
“It's not that I'm trying to cover

“What happened?” Rebecca asked, her voice surprisingly calm.
Gregory hesitated for a second, then blurted out, “He passed out from exhaustion. He's still in the hospital,
hasn't woken up yet.”
“Taketo the hospital,” Rebecca said, her tone flat and unreadable.
“Got it,” Gregory replied.
He hit the gas, speeding straight for the hospital.
While waiting at a red light, Gregory checked the rearview mirror and looked at Rebecca. There was none of

He was finally starting to understand why Jeffrey couldn't let Rebecca go.
‘She's genuinely a great person,” Gregory thought to himself.
