Chapter 279
“Apology accepted. Just focus on your job from now on,” Rebecca said, letting it go. She swept her gaze over the
team. “Product Manager, Head of R&D, and all team leaders, let's have a meeting right now.”
“Yes,” everyone replied in unison.
“Our team leader just quit,” said the girl who'd spoken earlier.
“Ours too,” added the guy who had just apologized to Rebecca.
The girl and the man-both spoke up again to clarify the situation.
Rebecca made a quick decision. “You two, step up as acting team leaders.”
“Okay,” they replied.
Having settled everything, Rebecca walked straight into her office.
Meditech had been founded ten years ago, and most of the staff had been here for more than four years- some
even as long as eight.
They'd all grown attached to the place. It might've been a small company, but the perks were great, and in this
hyper-competitive world, Meditech was actually one of those rare, genuinely people-friendly companies.
At least Rebecca had finally taken that first step, and things at Meditech hadn't totally ccrashing down
around her.
Rebecca holed up in meetings with her crew the whole afternoon.
Not only did she bag that project this month, she also did her homework on every detail of the Meditech.
system-no way she'd end up steering them blindly or tossing out clueless ideas once the project started.
Four hours straight. That was how long the meeting lasted.
“Starting tomorrow, follow your assigned tasks,” Rebecca said to wrap things up. She glanced at Charles, the
assistant team lead who had apologized earlier. “Charles, you'll be in charge of the Hospital Information System-
think you can handle that?”
“No problem,” Charles replied.
He had nothing but respect for Rebecca now. There was no way he'd refuse.
Rebecca turned to Sunny, the girl who'd spoken up before. “Sunny, you'll be handling the Laboratory Information
System.”
Sunny grinned. “On it! Consider it done!”
“For the PACS system, implementation, and testing, just keep your usual roles,” Rebecca said to the three. “If
anything comes up, reach out to me, the Product Manager, or the Head of R&D.”

back to work tomorrow.”
With that, she grabbed her files and headed back to her office with Mark.
As soon as Rebecca walked in, Sunny-with her long hair-knocked on the office door, her bright eyes a little
hesitant as she ventured, “Boss?”
“Cin,” Rebecca said, settling into her chair and looking up at her. “What's going on?”
“Everyone wantedto ask about work hours,” Sunny said, working up her nerve. “Are we doing the usual, or is
there anything new?”
Rebecca paused for a moment, puzzled. ‘What does she mean?‘ she thought.
But after a couple seconds, Rebecca caught on. “Just stick to your regular schedule from previous years.”
Sunny let out a sigh of relief. “Got it.”
Seeing that Sunny still hadn't left, Rebecca asked, “Anything else?”
“Nope,” Sunny replied, shooting a glance at Rebecca's bare fingers. She had a pretty good guess now. “I'll head
out then.”
Rebecca just nodded.
As soon as the office door shut, Mark, who’d been quietly standing by, finally spoke up with a knowing tone. “She
was actually trying to figure out if you're single.”
Rebecca's hand froze as she flipped through her files.
“She stared at your hands for at least five seconds,” Mark said with a straight face. “I bet it won't be long before
someone starts dropping you gifts-or even tries to ask you out for dinner.”
“No way, Rebecca shot back without even thinking.
“How about we make a bet?” Mark suggested.
Rebecca glanced at his usual poker face. “What are we betting on?”
Mark was all about the money. “Cash. If | win, you give30 thousand. If | lose, I'll pay you 30 thousand.”
Is he short on cash?’ Rebecca wondered.
About a month ago, she’d been thinking of getting an assistant to help with all the everyday chores at work, but
before the announcement even went out, Mark had already stepped up.
‘What did he say again?‘ Rebecca thought, trying to remember.

It was something like, “I'll be your assistant.”
She asked him, “Why?”
He replied, “I'm protecting you 24/7 anyway, so I'm basically made to be your assistant.”
“No way,” Rebecca said right away. “That's way too much work. Your body wouldn't stand it”

Mark just smiled. “I can handle it-just double my salary. If you're not sure about my skills, we can do an
interview.”
So he nailed the interview, showed off sserious skills, and ended up scoring double pay-as both her
bodyguard and her assistant.
Mark played a crucial role in locking down this project-couldn’t have done it without him.
Rebecca did all the charm work with the clients, while Mark handled the booze for the first half of the night.
“Anybody grinding for a paycheck could use the cash,” Mark replied, his eyes totally serious as he looked au her.
“So, you wanna bet?”
“Bet,” Rebecca shot back without a second thought.
Jessica had once told her something.
Rebecca remembered Jessica saying, “Trust me, nobody ever has feelings for their boss-much less actually likes
them.”
“Ms. Jensen,” Mark said again.
‘Rebecca blinked, a little lost.
Mark pressed his lips together, fixing her with a serious look. “Are you trying to be a hands-off boss who just
kicks back and lets the team run everything?”
A flicker of confusion crossed Rebecca's eyes.
‘Look, | know a bit about the project you're working on,” Mark said, his mind clearly on the dollar signs. “Just toss
Rebecca just stared at him, speechless.
Mark kept pitching himself. “I'll put together all the project plans and make sure your team gets everything
done in record time.”
“No need,” Rebecca replied without missing a beat. “The product manager and head of R&D will take care of
ie.”
“At their speed, it'll take about a month just to lock down the main structure,” Mark said, still totally calm. “But |
can give you a complete plan in only two weeks.”

Rebecca gave him a dubious look.
This was a huge project-they’d just spent four hours in the meeting hashing out what needed to be done. Even
for an initial plan, the product manager, head of R&D, and all the team leaders would probably need a month to
put it together.
“Two weeks? Did he really just say that?’ Rebecca wondered, getting more skeptical by the minute.
Mark stood his ground under Rebecca's skeptical look. “If you're not convinced, how about making another bet?”
“No need,” Rebecca cut him off. “Just get started-letsee what you've got.”
‘Either he’s just bluffing,” Rebecca thought, ‘or maybe he really has experience with giant medical system
projects.’
‘Maybe he’s actually worked on something this big before.
‘Otherwise, there's absolutely no way anyone could get it done in just two weeks."
For once, a flicker of doubt actually broke Mark's usual poker face, his brows pulling together.
Rebecca caught the look and asked, “Is something wrong?”
“You're just trying to freeload,” Mark said, slow and straight.
Rebecca was stunned.
“Me?” Rebecca asked, genuinely baffled.
Mark just said, “You bet.”
“Tell me, have | ever mooched off you a single tsince you started as my bodyguard?” For the first time,
Rebecca wondered if Mark lived with dollar signs in his eyes. “We've already locked in the core crew- dumping
you in now would just stir the pot.”
The product manager and head of R&D were both long-tveterans at the company.
They'd been here for as long as Meditech had existed.
It wouldn't be right to strip the original leadership of their authority just for a quick boost in efficiency.
“30 thousand, flat fee,” Mark said decisively, not hesitating for a second.
Rebecca was just about to say something when her phone buzzed, Glancing at the screen, she saw the name
“Stanley” pop up. For a split second, she froze, then slid her finger across the screen and picked up the call.
“Hello?”
