“Just remember, don’t let your heart soften and make you forget everything that happened before,” Mark added,

noticing her confusion.

Rebecca's curiosity only grew. “Have you ever been hurt by love?”

Mark shrugged, “I've always been single. No one’s had the chance to break my heart.”

Rebecca teased, “Then where'd you pick up all this relationship wisdom?”

“A true pro always has a countermeasure ready before trouble even starts,” Mark said, without a hint of emotion.

“I've read just about everything out there, binged all kinds of movies, and gathered wisdom from just about

everyone. That's how | know.”

Rebecca glanced at him a few more times, unable to hide her curiosity.

Mark grinned, “If you had to scoreas a husband, what would | get out of ten?”

Rebecca shrugged, keeping it real. “No idea-I’'m not your wife, so | can’t exactly judge.”

“Just imagine I'm your husband,” Mark pressed, refusing to drop the subject. “So, what would my score be?”

Rebecca gave him a skeptical look. “Got your eye on a girl?”

Mark blinked, thrown for a loop. “Huh?”

Rebecca teased, shooting him a cheeky grin. “Or maybe it’s a guy?”

“If you'd rather not answer, that’s totally fine. But you shouldnt go around assuming what your bodyguard is

thinking,” Mark replied, totally straight-faced. “Since it’s your first time, | won't hold it against you.”

Rebecca thought for the umpteenth time, ‘Mark’s mind really runs on a different track than everyone else's.

To this day, she still couldn't figure Mark out.

“Where will | be staying over the next few days?” Mark asked. His logic was a little unusual, but when it cto

assignments, he never let Rebecca down.

“Third room on the right, first floor,” Rebecca replied. She'd already had Victor set everything up for him. “If you

need anything, just let Victor know.”

Mark nodded. “Got it.”

Rebecca just hummed in response.

Rebecca had barely walked a few steps when Victor approached, looking hesitant, like he had something to say

but couldn’t quite spit it out.

Noticing his awkwardness, Rebecca cut right to the chase. “You need something?”

“It's just a minor issue,” Victor replied, still as youthful as ever and treating Rebecca with his usual respectful

calm. “Up until now, we've always served you and Mr. Hanson, following his every order first and foremost. But

now...”

Victor trailed off, searching for the right way to put it.

He just couldn't find the right words.

If they asked whether their services were still needed, it might look like they didn’t trust Ms. Jensen.

But if he let it go and something happened later, Ms. Jensen might think they were still putting Mr. Hanson's

orders before hers, and that wouldn't end well.

“Everything stays as usual, and I'll be issuing your paychecks from now on,” Rebecca caught on instantly. “But

there's one thing.”

“Please, go ahead,” Victor replied quickly, a wave of relief washing over him.

Rebecca made it clear, “Don’t mention anything aboutto Jeffrey, and from now on, you take your orders from

Victor nodded. “Got it!”

Rebecca nodded. “Alright.”

With that, she headed upstairs.

Rebecca hardly ever visited Rebecca's Manor anymore, but the staff had all been working here for ages. It felt

wrong to dismiss them just because she and Jeffrey split up. Anyway, with the divorce money she got from

Jeffrey, covering everyone's salary was no problem at all.

“Oh, right—almost forgot,” Rebecca said suddenly as the thought crossed her mind.

Victor, who'd been about to go tell the staff, paused and turned back. “Yes, Ms. Jensen?”

“If Jeffrey ever asks you to work over at his place, go ahead-it’s fine,” Rebecca said, since everyone knew Jeffrey

pretty well. “You're free to cand go, just don’t let any secrets slip between the two sides.”

‘Mr. Hanson doesn’t really need our help,” Victor answered honestly. “He’s just living in a regular apartment

now.”

Rebecca paused for a moment.

Victor shrugged, unfazed. “Gregory handles everything for him-meals, clothes, you nit.”

Rebecca kept her feelings in check, hummed softly, and went upstairs.

She lingered in the master bedroom for a while, and couldn't help but start thinking about how Jeffrey was living

these days. Ever since she met him, he'd always had people taking care of every little detail in his life.

Victor, Mary Shaw, Evelyn, plus a handful of other help and chefs who could make just about any dish you

Jetthey was totally used to living in big houses and manors surrounded by flowers and greenery-to him, all that

green stuff’ meant life.

Rebecca couldn't help thinking, ‘Why's he suddenly living in a plain apartment now?"

It can’t be about money, Rebecca thought. ‘No way.

He could buy himself a whole villa with just a month's salary.

Just as her mind was wandering, Rebecca grabbed her phone, planning to do a quick search. She hadn't even

tapped the browser icon before a message from Stanley popped up: “Rebecca, are you free this afternoon?”

She quickly typed back: “Yeah, but not much.”

She still needed to review the projects in Jelasburg and Riverside City. If she could manage, she’d prep two bids-

if she got swamped, one would have to do.

Stanley sent a voice reply almost immediately. “Hey, do you mind stopping by when you have a little time?

Gregory and | are both busy this afternoon, so could you cover for us for about half an hour?”

“Didn’t you guys say | could call you whenever if | needed anything?” Rebecca exposed his weak excuse without

hesitation.

“Hey, it's just a little emergency,” Stanley said, sounding almost apologetic. “Promise, it won't take more than

half an hour. Since we're officially partners now, can you cand bail us out?”

Rebecca replied easily, “I'll drop by around three.”

Stanley: “Awesome!”

Rebecca casually closed the chat window.

Stanley was seriously ride-or-die for Jeffrey. The minute Rebecca showed up, he signed the contract with her like

it was nothing, selling himself out without batting an eye-all for his buddy.

Plus, it was only for a week. Rebecca was just counting down the days until she could bounce.

“She’s in,” Stanley told Gregory. “Go handle your company stuff-don’t sweat it. I'll get Tommy and Barry to keep

an eye out, make sure Rebecca and Jeffrey get suninterrupted alone time.”

“I still think this is pretty iffy,” Gregory said, not bothering to hide his doubts.

Stanley replied, “What feels off about it?”

Gregory thought back on everything lately. “Knowing Ms. Jensen, even if she does show up, she'll probably just

sit there with Jeffrey for a bit. She’s not one to fuss over him, and she’s definitely not the type to drop any sweet

words.”

“Isn't that totally normal?” Stanley said, now that Jeffrey was okay, his head finally clear. “If she really started

babying Jeffrey, I'd be the one freaking out.”

Gregory: “What?”

Stanley snorted, “Would you seriously start being all warm and fuzzy to someone who kinda screwed you over

and just keeps hanging around?”

Gregory was about to reply, then it clicked-he remembered exactly what had gone down between Jeffrey and

Rebecca.

Sure, he did it all for love, but hurt is still hurt.

“Honestly, if she just hangs out here a bit more each day, we'll stop stressing about Jeffrey,” Stanley sighed,

clearly worn out from worrying. “Having her around works better than any meds or doctor, seriously.”

Stanley just couldn't wrap his head around why Jeffrey seemed to struggle way more during the cooling-off

month than after the divorce.

Thinking it through, he realized the biggest difference was that Jeffrey had moved out of Rebecca's Manor. His

new place had nothing of Rebecca-no sign she’d ever been there, not a whiff of her left. No wonder he was

tossing and turning all night.

Case in point.

Just yesterday, as soon as Rebecca stopped by, Jeffrey was up and about in no time.

“But what if Ms. Jensen leaves again?” Gregory pressed, visibly more worried than Stanley, since he'd seen

Jeffrey's condition worsen day by day. “Do you think Mr. Hanson might get even worse?”

“Not a chance,” Stanley said firmly. “Don’t go thinking your boss is skind of soulless robot.”

If Rebecca hadn't turned up this time, Jeffrey might've gone downhill fast. But now that she’s here, he'll find

ways to justify things to himself. Just look-yesterday, he wouldn't let Gregory dig up any info on Rebecca, but as

soon as she showed up, he wanted to know everything about her.
