Over the next few days, Rebecca visited Jeffrey at the hospital every day as promised, chatting with him

occasionally. Before she knew it, the days had passed, and it was tfor Jeffrey to be discharged,

Seeing him change into his own clothes, Rebecca turned to Stanley and said, “I've done everything you asked. |

hope you'll keep your promise too.”

“No problem!” Stanley replied without hesitation.

Rebecca just nodded, said nothing more, and left without so much as a goodbye to Jeffrey,

Watching her walk away, Jeffrey’s gaze grew more intense than ever, and emotions were swirling restlessly

inside him.

Seeing Jeffrey like this, Stanley leaned in and whispered to Gregory, “If Rebecca has dinner with anyone else

later, set it up so Jeffrey’s eating at the splace. Just make sure the timing and distance are right.”

Gregory replied, “Got it.”

Everything Jeffrey had asked about lately was clearly all about protecting Rebecca without her knowing. Now that

he was set on this, Gregory, as his assistant, definitely wasn’t going to drop the ball.

Jeffrey finished changing, glanced over at Stanley and Gregory whispering together, and didn’t bother to get

involved. With his usual calm, he turned to Gregory and asked, “Did you take care of what | asked a few days

back?”

“Everything's ready,” Gregory replied quickly.

“Good,” Jeffrey said, putting on his watch and getting ready to head out.

Gregory called after him, “Mr. Hanson.”

Jeffrey glanced over at him.

Gregory reported, “Your parents want you to cback to the Hanson residence. They said they have something

to discuss with you.”

“Didn’t | tell you to ignore their messages?” Jeffrey said.

“This time's a bit different-they mentioned Ms. Jensen,” Gregory explained honestly. “And if you don’t go back,

they'll just reach out to Stephen instead.”

Jeffrey's eyes went even darker, emotions swirling beneath the surface.

Gregory asked, “Are you heading back to the Hanson residence?”

Jeffrey, as always, gave the sreply. “No.”

Gregory said, “Alright.”

“Keep an eye on them for now, and if anything targeting Rebecca pops up, take care of it immediately,” Jeffrey

instructed, his tone serious. “Make sure she doesn’t get dragged into any trouble.”

“Understood,” Gregory replied, always on point. “The thing is, what if Stephen’s involved?”

Stephen might not run the Hanson Group, but honestly, he’s pretty much as capable as Jeffrey when it comes to

getting things done.

He's the kind of guy you just can’t always keep track of, no matter how hard you try.

“A couple of days ago, your parents called him back to the Hanson residence to talk. My intel didn’t catch what

was said,” Gregory reported. “What if they're planning something against Rebecca?”

Jeffrey stayed silent.

There was a long pause.

“He won't,” he said.

Gregory ventured, “But right now’s the best shot he’s ever had at taking you down. You really trust he won't pull

something drastic?”

“Just keep tabs on them,” Jeffrey replied.

If Stephen didn’t have any weak spots, maybe he’d try using Rebecca against Jeffrey. But he definitely does—

he’s had Karen by his side for three years now, and if there were no real feelings there, he never would've

reacted like that before.

Gregory nodded, trusting his boss. “Alright.”

After everything blew over, even though Rebecca and Jeffrey lived in the scity, they never ran into each

other again.

Jeffrey was still struggling with insomnia and barely touched his food, but honestly, things were a lot better than

before. ‘At least I'm not falling apart anymore,’ he quietly told himself.

Rebecca, meanwhile, had finished all the project bids for Riverside City and Jelasburg. On weekdays, she’d meet

up with Mark for business dinners and catch up on work, and every weekend, she'd hop a flight to Honnala just

to spend squality twith Samuel.

Life was packed, but she loved how full and rewarding every day felt.

One day, Rebecca had dinner with a hospital director from Jelasburg. Over the meal, she talked about her

company’s size and gave a quick rundown of their past projects. The conversation flowed easily, and both sides

seemed to be enjoying themselves.

As the dinner was winding down, Mark scanned the table, then leaned in and whispered to Rebecca, “Boss,

something's off.”

Rebecca kept chatting with the others, a smile still on her lips.

Mark knew she’d heard him, so he leaned in again and whispered, “Not a single drop of wine all night. That's just

not normal.”

“What's so strange about that?” Rebecca replied after finishing her conversation, keeping her tone casual.

“Speople like wine, others prefer coffee. Everyone's got their own taste.”

“You really haven't seen much of the world,” Mark said, looking completely serious.

Rebecca shot him a look.

Is he seriously getting bored just because we're not drinking?‘ she thought.

Another ten minutes went by, and the dinner was just about finished. The hospital execs got up, thanked

Rebecca politely, and started to head out. Rebecca walked them to the door of the private room.

“That's all right,” one of them said with a polite nod. “No need to go any further.”

“Alright,” Rebecca replied, not pushing it. She figured they didn’t want anyone catching sight of them leaving the

dinner together.

“Boss,” Mark said as he watched the others leave, not messing around with his tone at all. “You're probably not

gonna get this project.”

Rebecca

gave him a look. “Can't you just have a little faith infor once?”

The whole dinner was super chill. Everyone got along great.

Their bid was actually pretty low too.

There was no way this project wouldn't end up with her.

“Did you miss something kinda crucial?” Mark, usually all cool and serious, actually looked a little lost for a

second.

Rebecca gave him a confused glance.

Mark shared what he'd picked up. “Honestly, they were almost overly respectful to you.”

Rebecca tried to recall. “Were they, though?”

“Every tyou raised your coffee instead of wine for a toast, they all stood up right away,” Mark said, catching

even the smallest details. “And whatever you said, they'd chin or respond-never a dull moment,

not once.”

Rebecca looked at him. “Isn't that just being respectful?”

Both sides acted cultured and polite, skipping all that drinking gnonsense. Honestly, what's wrong with

getting together without those boozy rituals?

“When you had dinners with Jeffrey, did he ever stand up just because someone else did?” Mark gave the most

obvious example “Tonight those fall.

people trying to toast Jeffrey for his favor”

Rebecca paused.

It suddenly clicked for her.

After putting up with those gross, pointless boozy business dinners in Honnala, Rebecca had automatically

assumed these folks were just upstanding people. If Mark hadn't pulled back the curtain, she wouldn't have

realized things were way more complicated beneath the surface.

“Do you think they know about your ties to Jeffrey?” Mark asked.

“Not unless someone went out of their way to tell them,” Rebecca replied. She'd always kept her head down.

back in Jelasburg. “But if anybody wanted to give them a heads-up, they'd find out for sure.”

As she thought it over, Rebecca turned to Mark and asked, “Why do you think | won't get this project?”

“The way they talked to you was so overly polite, almost like they were trying to flatter you, but very subtly,”

Mark said quietly, his perceptiveness almost scary. “And the whole time, they kept exchanging glances like some

kind of silent code.”

Rebecca was caught off guard. ‘Wait, seriously?’

‘He actually picked up on all that?‘ she couldn't help but think.

Mark continued, “It was like they were weighing how to avoid offending you, but also not let the project fall into

your hands.”

Mark clarified, “More accurately, they don’t want to upset the real force backing you-Jeffrey.”

Rebecca mulled it over.

If Mark was right, then who'd dropped a word to these folks?

Michael Quinn? Nah, doesn’t really add up. This is Jelasburg-he doesn’t have that kind of reach here. Besides,

with how cautious he is, he'd never risk stepping on Jeffrey's toes, Rebecca thought.

Rebecca was still puzzling it over when-BANG!-a thunderous crash cfrom right behind her, making her jump.

‘What the hell was that?‘ she thought, heart racing.
