Three months ago, when his family said he was old enough to get married, they casually talked about setting

him up with Yvonne Jones as his fiancée. He didn’t bother to object and just let them do whatever they wanted -

after all, it wasn’t like this was their first tpulling this kind of stunt.

They were always just acting on a whim, he thought.

One day they'd decide this girl was perfect, and the next it'd be someone else entirely.

“Steve?” Yvonne tentatively called out.

“Let’s wait until you've had a couple days to get over jet lag,” Steve brushed her off lightly. “Just focus on resting

right now.”

Yvonne responded immediately, “Okay!”

Once Stephen walked out of the room with his phone, Karen finally let out a breath-only for her mind to keep

spinning with all the ways she was still tied to him.

If she really wanted to break free, she’d have to get her little sister, who'd just started college, out from under

his watch. But college wasn’t like high school, where transferring was simple-her sister was locked into four

years at that university.

Which meant...

She'd be tangled up with him for at least another four years.

Just as Karen was getting lost in her worries, Rebecca texted: [Are you okay?]

Rebecca picked this moment on purpose-by now, anything important should've been settled, and she was

always, ready to lend a hand if Karen needed it.

Ding!

Karen replied: [I'm fine, don’t worry.]

Rebecca started typing another message, but paused. Unlike with Jessica Scott, she wasn’t close enough with

Karen to keep chatting after Karen had already said she was fine-it almost felt rude to push any further.

After thinking it over,

she just replied: [Alright then.]

After that day, Rebecca never saw Karen again, nor did they message each other. It was as if that whole deep

heart-to-heart had just been a passing dream.

Another two weeks slipped by in the blink of an eye.

After Rebecca made several trips to Riverside City, she finally landed that project, but the one in Jelasburg fell

through.

Just like Mark had predicted, nobody dared shut her down completely-no one wanted to get on Jeffrey's bad side.

Instead, everyone was on their best behavior at the banquet, just trying to leave a good impression in case

Jeffrey ever decided to single them out.

So, after signing the contract in Riverside City, Rebecca was all set to head back to Honnala.

“You're just dropping the Jelasburg project?” Mark asked.

“Yeah, I'm not bothering with it anymore,” Rebecca said. After those last couple of dinners, she'd figured out how

things really worked over there.

In Jelasburg, nobody dared mess with Jeffrey except Stephen-and for sreason, Stephen seemed to have it

out for her. She still had no clue where she’d ticked him off, but with an entire city’s project locked down in

Riverside, she didn’t have to wait around for scraps from Jelasburg. It just wasn’t worth her time.

Mark put on a straight face. “That's kind of a blow to your reputation.”

Rebecca just stared at him. “Huh?”

Mark didn’t hold back at all, totally ignoring his boss's pride. “This is supposed to be your territory. Losing the

project to someone else? Kinda makes you look bad.”

“Then why don’t you go negotiate it,” Rebecca replied, totally unfazed-she knew that was just how he was. “If

you can land it, I'll cut you in for ten percent of the profits.”

Mark: “No way.”

Rebecca: “What?”

Mark shook his head, a self-deprecating grin on his face. “Look, if you-my ex-boss’s ex-wife-couldn’t close the

deal, what chance does the ex-boss’s ex-wife's bodyguard-slash-assistant-slash-driver likehave?”

Rebecca just stared at him, unsure what he was even getting at.

‘Honestly, how does any of that even add up?‘ she wondered.

Mark never missed a beat. “Tickets are booked. If we head out now, you'll make it hin tfor dinner with

Samuel and Mrs. Jones.”

Rebecca and Mark had barely taken a step before Barry cafter them, driving Jeffrey close behind.

On the way to the airport,

Gregory was updating him. “Mr. Hanson, those folks at the hospital are all smiles on the surface, but truth is,

they're still listening to whatever Stephen says behind the scenes. Do you wantto bring them in for a talk?”

“No need,” Jeffrey said coolly. He knew perfectly well this wasn’t on them-the real issue was higher up.

Stephen was the real problem here. He'd promised to stay out of Rebecca’s business, but now he was openly

going back on his word. Guess he really had forgotten the warning Jeffrey gave him before.

Jeffrey glanced over, “Didn't you say Stephen used his influence to block a few of Karen's projects?”

Gregory nodded. “Yeah.”

He hadn't known about it at first-he just happened to stumble across it while handling spaperwork for

Jeffrey.

“Tell them to release all of Karen's shows,” Jeffrey said in a cold voice. He normally didn’t meddle in other

people’s affairs, but Stephen had gone way too far this time. “If anything happens, tell them to blme.”

“Will do,” Gregory answered.

Barry couldn't resist teasing, “About tyou showed up, Mr. Hanson!”

Jeffrey blinked. “Huh?”

Gregory echoed, “What?”

“You seriously have no idea how anxious | was when you completely ignored Ms. Jensen,” Barry blurted out,

totally shipping you two. When you didn’t talk for a while, | was so restless | couldn't even focus!”

Gregory cleared his throat. “Eyes on the road, okay?”

Barry just grinned like a goof and floored it, speeding up to chase after Rebecca's car.

When they got to the airport, Gregory took note of how Jeffrey couldn't stop watching Rebecca's direction.

Gathering his courage, he spoke up, “Mr. Hanson, there's a project over in Honnala that needs discussing. Do

you want to go?”

“When?” Jeffrey's tone was flat.

“Tomorrow at ten a.m.,” Gregory answered seriously. “Negotiations should take about a week.”

Jeffrey just replied with a quiet, “Mm.”

Gregory finally relaxed, glad he’d made the right call. “The private jet’s set to depart in thirty minutes—you’ll

beat Ms. Jensen there by twenty minutes. Should | take you over now?”

“Just make the arrangements,” Jeffrey said, face unreadable.

“Will do,” Gregory replied.

He called the pilot to confirm the flight plan was on track.

Barry exchanged a look with him, and their eyes practically screamed: ‘Mr. Hanson is finally making his move!!"

During the entire trip. Jeffrey was always protecting Rebecca from the shadows-never showing himself, never

interfering with her affairs. He made sure she was safe without her ever realizing it, staying true to his promise

even as he quietly watched over her every step.

They landed in Honnala just after five in the afternoon.

Gregory had already made sure a car was waiting at the airport. Once they got off the plane, they slipped into

the private ride, keeping things under the radar the whole way. They only stepped in to quietly shadow

Rebecca's route and make sure she got hsafely, never letting her realize they were protecting her from

behind the scenes.

“Mr. Hanson,” Gregory said, watching Rebecca head inside the villa. It suddenly hit him-there was something

really important he needed to mention.

Jeffrey looked up.

Gregory glanced at his calendar. “Samuel's fifth birthday is coming up soon. Any plans for how you want to

spend it with him?”

Back then, you and Ms. Jensen would always throw a birthday party for Samuel together. Now that you've gone

your separate ways, it's probably not going to be like old times.

“I've already figured it out. No need to worry,” Jeffrey answered, confidence clear in his voice-he knew exactly

what he was going to do.

There was no way he’d let Samuel’s birthday pass him by.

And when it cto Rebecca, he was never going to let her down.

Rebecca was still thinking about it as she got out of the car. Before she could cup with a plan, Samuel, who

had been waiting for her, rushed out from inside and dove straight into her arms. “Mommy!”

Rebecca hugged him tight and kissed his cheek.

Samuel let out a couple of happy giggles.

“Mommy!” Samuel called out.

Rebecca smiled, “Hmm?”

Samuel gave her a sneaky look toward the house and lowered his voice mysteriously, “Don’t celebrate just yet!

There's a big fight waiting for you back home.”

Rebecca blinked, still confused. “What do you mean by a big fight?”

“About ten minutes ago, a whole squad of surprise visitors popped up-including your dad, your uncle, your

cousin, and the rest,” Samuel announced with a totally serious look on his face. “Seems like they're all here to

congratulate you... or so they say.”
