Chapter 308

Crash!

All kinds of stuff shattered all over the floor.

But Michael hadn't even vented half his anger.

“So what if he’s Mr. Guzman of the Guzman Group? Is that supposed to make him sbig shot?” he spat at the

air, his face twisted with rage. “He's still just a guy with no wife and no kids.”

“What a joke!”

“If I can’t get even, I'm not Michael Quinn!”

He just kept ranting.

He didn’t stop until he'd been cursing for a full ten minutes.

Victor waited until Michael's rage had died down a little before stepping up, voice gentle: “Sir, please, you need

to calm down.”

But there was no way Michael could just let this go.

Every the remembered how Ryan humiliated him right in front of Max, it felt like a wildfire was burning in his

chest. ‘That bastard."

Back then, he could tolerate Ryan picking on him and acting superior-but now the guy was looking down his

nose at him like sking of the world? Hell, he was the head of one of the Big Four Families-who the hell did

Ryan think he was to treat him like dirt?

“Dig up everything you can about Ryan’s weak spots,” Michael ordered, ice in his voice. ‘I swear, I'm going to

make that bastard regret crossing me!”

“Honestly, we haven't found any real dirt on him yet,” Victor replied, hesitating. You know we've been looking

into him for ages. “If | had to pick, I'd say Amelia and Rebecca-he seems to have a soft spot for those two.”

Michael's brows drew together.

Victor hesitated, “Should we target Rebecca Jensen?”

“No way,” Michael shot back, not about to take that risk. “We can mess around with other things, but if we drag

Rebecca into this, even if Ryan tries to meddle in the Quinn family’s affairs later, we won't have a leg to stand

on.”

“Then what do we do?” Victor asked, his mind going completely blank.

“You're asking me?” Michael snapped, his anger flaring even higher. “Am | supposed to have all the answers?”

Victor wisely kept his mouth shut.

As for heirs, Max could go toe-to-toe with Ryan’s successor, but that guy always flew under the radar.

“Have you checked Ryan’s medical records?” Michael asked, finally switching gears after racking his brain for a

solution.

“Yeah, we've looked into it,” Victor replied, having already thought of everything Michael could. “He's in perfect

health-no illnesses at all.”

Michael's frown deepened.

‘Why’s Ryan even healthier than me?‘ Michael groused inwardly.

‘Amelia must've snagged all the good genes from our parents. Otherwise, why do | always get left in the dust by

Ryan in everything?’

While he was lost in these thoughts, Max walked in. The moment he saw the mess on the floor, he knew exactly

what had happened. “That's Amelia's place, after all. There was no need to go head-to-head with Mr. Guzman.”

Michael had started to cool off a bit, but the moment he heard Max's comment, his temper shot straight back up.

“You think this is all on me?” Michael spat, unable to believe his own son wasn't on his side. “Ryan Guzman was

the one who picked a fight-if you're not even going to call him out and chblaming me, you'd better

remember who's your father!”

“Are you sure Mr. Guzman was the one who started it?” Max said, his face as cool and detached as always.

Michael was about to argue back, but then it hit him-Ryan’s first words to them were actually really courteous.

He couldn’t even complain about his attitude, let alone the way he spoke to them.

Truth was, Michael just wanted Ryan to feel miserable so badly, he kept picking apart anything the guy said,

looking for something to accuse him of.

His mood, already sour, took an even darker turn as he thought about all this.

“You're my son. No matter what, you should always have my back,” Michael snapped, the frustration clear in his

voice.

“I'm not getting involved in whatever grudge you have with Mr. Guzman,” Max replied, calm and deliberate.

“That's just like parents staying out of their kids‘ squabbles. You're the head of this family-you should know that

better than anyone.”

Michael got it.

But knowing was one thing-craving his son’s support was another.

“Try not to get into any head-on clashes with Mr. Guzman from now on, Max reminded his father, keeping his

voice steady. “Seriously-don’t even think about dragging your sister or Rebecca Jensen into this, or you might

end up pushing Ryan's buttons.”

Ryan never batted an eye at the usual petty .

But if Amelia or Rebecca got pulled in, Max knew even he might not be able to bail out his dad. Ryan was a

legend from the old guard-that kind of guy, if he made a move, nobody could predict what he'd do next.

“Are you tellingwhat to do?” Michael shot back, his face darkening.

Max stayed cool, unfazed. “Just a word of advice from someone younger, that’s all.”

Michael's chest heaved with anger.

First Ryan pissed him off outside, now Max was making him blow his top at home-was he just everyone's

punching bag or something? he fumed to himself.

Seeing his dad all riled up, Max knew he shouldn't stick around any longer. He opened his mouth, voice as cool

as ever: “Guess I'll let you chill for a bit. I'm heading out.”

Michael just watched as he walked away.

Max was almost out the door when Michael suddenly called out, “Max.”

Max paused, turning back with his usual icy, indifferent gaze.

Michael locked his eyes on him, asking the one thing that’s always bothered him, “Is your heart still with this

family?”

Max didn’t blink, his tone icy and detached. “What's that supposed to mean, Dad?”

“Ever since Rebecca and Amelia cback, you've been reaching out to them nonstop,” Michael pressed, eyes

never leaving Max. “Are you seriously considering passing your shares to them?”

“You were the one who toldto cover this time,” Max answered, his tone icy, eyes cold and detached as

ever. “The last twas for a family task, and before that, it was Grandpa who calledover....”

Michael started to protest, mouth half open-but as he replayed Max's words, he found no holes. Every single

tMax had met with Amelia or Rebecca, it was all about family business-never anything personal at all.

Still, Michael couldn't help but feel there was something off about Max. He was convinced that, no matter what,

Max would never be as loyal to the family as Liam was.

“Got it,” Michael tamped down his frustration. “Go take care of your business.”

Max left.

After weighing it for a while, Michael finally picked up the phone and called Liam.

There were things he would never rely on Max for-but when it cto Liam, Michael never had to doubt

Rebecca Jensen enjoyed a stretch of calm days. After two months of running herself ragged, she was finally

feeling human again. Once she’d wrapped her head around all the details of the Riverside City project, she

jumped right back into work with Mark Mason.

She hadn’t even stepped out the door when a blur of motion cbarreling toward her.

“Ms. Jensen!” Tom White, the bodyguard, was practically vibrating with excitement, his face lit up joy. “Are you

finally takingwith you this time?”

Ever since he started working here, Mark Mason had been stealing all his jobs.

He was bored out of his mind being stuck at the villa day after day, and those two new bodyguards were so stiff

and clueless it was like his spirit had taken a beating. Two months of this and he felt personally victimized by

sheer boredom.

Getting paid to do nothing was nice, sure, but for someone who lived for gossip, being stuck at hwas

absolute hell.

“Nope,” Mark Mason jumped in before Rebecca even had a chance to speak. He shot Tom White a smug look.

“Boss only needswatching her back-no one else.”

“Ms. Jensen-" Tom White totally blew off Mark, playfully dragging out her nand giving her those puppy- dog

eyes, all bright and full of hope.

Rebecca hesitated for a second, wanting to say something but biting it back.

Honestly, she didn’t mind bringing him along.

She'd originally planned to have both Mark and Tom tag along, just in case Michael tried something shady and

Mark couldn’t handle it solo. But these last two months had been a total grind, and since Mark kept insisting he

had things covered, Rebecca had put the extra backup idea on the back burner-for now, anyway.

“Mark’s so boring,” Tom White whined, flashing his sunshiny good looks and giving her a cheeky grin. “Ms.

Jensen, you need someone likearound—fun, charming, and never running out of clever things to say!”
