Chapter 318
“We're not sure yet. Tom White said in a gentle tone. Just listen to what he has to say, but don’t put too much
stock in it.”
Mark Mason added. “Yeah, | agree.”
With Mark's support, Rebecca Jensen gave a straightforward answer, “Alright.”
“You really trust us that much?” Tom White said, a bit surprised she didn’t even pause to think it over. “Aren’t you
worried we might just be trying to tank your business or joking around with you?”
“Maybe you would, Rebecca Jensen grinned, playfully shooting back now that she was used to having him
around. “But not Mark.”
Mark couldn’t hide his smugness at that.
He straightened up a little.
He swore he'd never let Mr. Hanson lose faith in him.
“Hey, you never know,” Tom White said, steering the car with a lazy grin. “You ever notice how in movies, the
mastermind behind it all is always the last person you'd suspect-the one who looks like a total innocent right at
the start?”
Rebecca Jensen rolled her eyes. “Please. That only happens in movies.”
Tom White chuckled. “Trust me, real life can be way more unpredictable than any movie.”
Rebecca Jensen smirked, “Guess that makes you the villain then.”
Tom White just gaped at her. ‘Wait, what?"
Mark grinned, backing Rebecca up. “Boss is right.”
“You know what? You're absolutely right,” Tom White replied, getting way too into it. “I'm handsome, charming,
an ace driver, and | can read people and psychology like no one else. If that’s not main character villain material,
I don’t know what is.”
Rebecca just stared at him, speechless.
Mark was totally at a loss for words too.
Tom White wasn’t done. “But relax, Ms. Jensen, because even if | am the villain, I'll still be your loyal chauffeur
and bodyguard-villain or not.”
“Eyes on the road,” Rebecca said sharply, glancing at him as he kept chatting and cutting through traffic. “I'd
rather not die just yet.”
Tom White grinned. “You can question my morals, but not my driving skills.”

Rebecca shot at him, “Are you bowing your head like Mark now?”
Mark blinked, bailled. ‘Wait, what did | do?”

What does this have to do with me?‘ he wondered.

Tom finally went quiet, but it only lasted a couple minutes before he spoke up again. “Ms. Jensen.”
Rebecca glanced up at him.
Tom asked, his tone suddenly serious, “Have you ever thought about the worst-case scenafor all this?”
“What do you mean?” Rebecca asked.
“The Guzman family and the Quinn family teaming up against you,” Tom said. He'd nearly kept it to himself, but
in the end, couldn't. Rebecca was just so straightforward-you couldn't help wanting to look out for her.
Rebecca's hand paused mid-reply on her phone.
Tom made it clear. “Just because Sebastian and Old Mr. Lawrence are at odds doesn’t mean Ryan's uncle and
your uncles won't join forces. You know, the whole ‘the enemy of their enemy is their friend’ thing.”
Rebecca had considered that before.
But she’d never actually met Ryan’s uncle herself.
According to her mom's info, the guy was deeply scheming and ruthless-definitely not someone you want to
mess with.
“Boss, you should dock his pay,” Mark suddenly chimed in.
Rebecca was still thinking about other things, so she just replied absentmindedly, “Why?”
Mark said, “Chauffeurs and bodyguards aren't supposed to meddle in the boss's business.”
Rebecca blinked. “Huh?”
Tom shot back, “And you never meddle, huh?”
Mark said smugly, “I'm the assistant-meddling in the boss's business comes with the job.”
Tom quipped, “Well, I'm the secretary. At least in theory!”
Mark shot back, “Says who? Ms. Jensen never hired you, and you didn’t even officially sign on.”
Tom grinned, “Ms. Jensen, makeyour personal secretary! No salary required-you get my services absolutely
free!”
Mark deadpanned, “Careful with how you say that. If someone hears ‘for free,’ they'll think Ms. Jensen has a

questionable private life.”
Rebecca just stared at them. speechless.
Rebecca mentally blocked out their chatter
a
They were always bickering-minor quarrels every few days, major ones nearly every week. She’d becused
to it, but as soon as a serious discussion derailed into childish squabbling, it still wore on her. Honestly. she
sometimes felt more like their preschool teacher than their boss.
She grabbed her phone to catch up on the work texts she hadn't finished. Once she'd settled things with the
product manager and tech director, she looked over at Mark and Tom in the front seats.
Over the past few days, Rebecca had gotten access to Mark and Tom's files.
Nothing unusual popped out-everything looked spotless, not even a hint of trouble anywhere.
Just a couple of ordinary wage earners hunting for a job, nothing that would make anyone look twice.
But after getting to know them up close, the way they always kept their cool and judged things so calmly made
Rebecca wonder if there was more to their story than met the eye.
Mark was so calm, it was like he was a machine-unshakable and eerily composed.
Tom, on the other hand, knew everything about everything—like a walking encyclopedia.
“Tom,” Rebecca said, deciding to test him again.
“At your service, Ms. Jensen,” Tom made it sound almost ceremonial every time.
“You said earlier that Old Mr. Lawrence looked atwith 95% self-interest,” Rebecca asked. “How can you tell?
Just spill whatever's on your mind.”
Tom shot a look at Mark in the passenger seat. “Mark said bodyguards and drivers aren’t supposed to meddle in
the boss's business.”
Rebecca raised an eyebrow. “Aren't you also my secretary—for free, no less?”
Tom just gaped at her. ‘Wait, seriously?‘
As they stopped at a red light, Tom turned around, staring at her in utter disbelief.
Rebecca kept her face impassive as always. “What's wrong?”
“You're seriously learning all Mark's bad habits,” Tom protested, half joking, half accusing. “You used to pay me
something, at least. Now you're just straight up freeloading.”
Rebecca didn’t respond.
Answering him would just mean she’d have to pay him.

Tom seemed even more complicated than Mark She'd have to look into him a bit more and figure out what
his deal was
Your really have changed. Tom said, laying it on thick Back then, yourd make it clear you weren't freeloading,
and if | could handle being your secretary, you'd say I'd get paid
Once my business gets bigger. Ill save the secretary position for you,” Reberca said, selling him a dream. “For
now let’s get back to the real issues.”
Tom and Mark exchanged glances
Both of them had the sthought: Whoa, Ms. Jensen didn’t just get swept off track this time?”
Rebecca was sharp, catching their silent exchange. “Something up?”
“Boss, you've really leveled up.” Mark said matter-of-factly. “A few days ago, you'd get caught up in Tom's pace
and forget what you chere to ask. But today, after all that sidetracking, you still managed to pull us back to
business.
Tom gave her a big thumbs-up. “That's our Ms. Jensen!”
Rebecca kept her poker face, totally unfazed. “I'll take the compliment. So, can we finally get back to business?”
After getting sidetracked by Tom’s way with words more times than she’d like-without even realizing it in the
moment-Rebecca would lie awake at night, running those conversations back in her mind and telling herself she
wasn't going to let it happen again.
But Tom really did have a knack for hijacking the vibe every single time.
Even with her keeping a close eye on it, it took a bunch of tries before she finally managed to hold her ground
the way she did today.
“All those tricks | know-psychology, picking up on micro-expressions-that’s how | caught it,” Tom shrugged, still
sounding mild. “I was really watching Mr. Guzman when he was talking to you.”
Rebecca raised an eyebrow. Was he really for real?
Even if he actually knew how to do that,’ Rebecca thought, ‘he shouldn't sound so damn confident about it when
talking to me.”
He looked so absolutely certain, like he had everything figured out. Rebecca was starting to wonder if Tom could
actually see right through Mr. Guzman'’s real purpose in coming to her.
“Just pay even closer attention next time,” she told him flatly. “See if you can dig up more info.”
