“Maybe we shouldn't have lost them back there,” Tom said suddenly as they got close to the hospital. When you
coast for too long, your guard really does drop.
Rebecca blinked at him, puzzled.
Mark raised an eyebrow at him, equally confused.
“It's not like we're up to anything classified,” Tom said, looking dead serious. “If they wanna tail us, let them. I've
got moves and | know my way around a car-trust me, whatever they pull, I'll make sure you both stay safe.”
Rebecca gave it sthought.
He had a point.
“Now that they know you've got a bodyguard with serious driving chops, they're not likely to cat us the
sway again. Odds are, they'll switch tactics,” Tom said, acting like it was shard-earned wisdom.
Rebecca and Mark exchanged a glance, both clearly thinking, ‘He's just finding new ways to brag about himself.’
Honestly, the level of driving he showed earlier was nothing to write habout-any regular cab driver in
Jelasburg could’ve pulled that off easy. It wouldn't impress anyone around here.
“Ms. Jensen, ever thought about makingyour Swiss army knife bodyguard?” Tom joked, grinning. “Just double
my paycheck, putin charge of Mark, and you get the ultimate bodyguard package. How's that for a deal?”
Rebecca just tuned him out, lowering her head and scrolling through the tech director's latest updates.
Tom kept at it. “Seriously, you're not even a little tempted?”
“I'm seriously awesome, you know,” he insisted.
“Con, up my salary-you won't regret it, promise!”
“Trust me, I'm a total bargain-you’re gonna love havingaround,” Tom added with a cheeky grin.
“You should be grateful I'm not docking your pay for bugging the boss,” Mark retorted, clearly unimpressed. “Run
your mouth one more tand I'll personally hit mute.”
Tom clenched his jaw.
He knew Mark meant it-he’d go through with it for sure.
‘Think he’s all that just ‘cause he can fight? Give it stime, I'll round up a dozen guys and show him who's
boss, Tom grumbled to himself.

Rebecca was totally used to their daily banter. When they got to the hospital, she hopped out and headed inside
with them. But just as they were making their way toward the elevators, someone nearly ran right into
her.

The guy smacked right into Mark’s arm, which was already blocking the way to keep Rebecca safe.
He apologized, looking all serious in his suit. “Sorry about that.”
Mark didn’t say a word-he just kept Rebecca close and steered her away.
They hadn't even gone a couple steps when a middle-aged man slowly appeared from behind the guy who'd
bumped into them. Rebecca’s gaze flickered over to him for just a second before she looked away, as if he were
just another face in the crowd.
“You must be Rebecca,” the middle-aged man spoke up, carrying himself with a certain gravitas.
Rebecca stopped and stared at him, confusion written all over her face.
Tom and Mark immediately shifted, instinctively positioning themselves to keep her safe.
“I guess this is our first tmeeting,” the man said politely, watching her in that way adults look at kids. “I'm
your father’s uncle-so | guess that makesyour great-uncle.”
Rebecca recognized him as Ryan's uncle.
But her mom had always warned her-never admit you know anyone from the Guzman family unless you've been
formally introduced.
“What brings you to the hospital?” Miles asked, his gaze sweeping over Mark and Tom behind her. “Visiting a
friend, or are you not feeling well?”
Rebecca replied curtly, “Work.”
Miles asked, feigning ignorance, “Are you a doctor?”
Rebecca answered, keeping it casual, “Nope, just here for something else. How about you?”
“Work, sas you,” Miles said, all formal smiles. He looked about Ryan's age, but was a generation above him
in the family tree. “If you're free sometime, let's have a meal together.”
“Alright,” Rebecca replied, knowing it was just spolite small talk.
Miles headed off with the suited guy who'd nearly run into her, never once looking back.
Tom leaned back, arms crossed, all casual and snarky as he launched into his usual rundown. “Since when does
he have a job here, anyway?”
Mark gave him a matching look.

Rebecca gave him the exact sstare.
Tom was momentarily stumped.
“Look, he’s a director at Guzman Group-what kinda business does he have at a hospital?” Tom clarified. “I mean,
it’s not like the Guzman Group is known for dabbling in healthcare.”
Rebecca watched him for a few seconds and just shrugged it off-‘Weird is fine. As long as my crew isn’t making
trouble or breaking the law, | don’t care,” she thought, unfazed. “Hey, why don’t you run after him and fish for
sinside gossip? Who knows, maybe you'll land an exclusive,” she added, her voice laced with casual irony.
Tom went, “Huh?”
Mark echoed, “Wait, what?”
They both shot her a look at the exact stime.
Then, right in front of Rebecca, Tom leaned toward Mark and muttered, “Bro, you ever feel like Ms. Jensen is
getting seriously unpredictable lately?”
Mark shrugged, “It’s not weird, it’s called growing up.”
Tom frowned, “Huh? Seriously?”
‘How does everything somehow turn into growing up?‘ he grumbled to himself, rolling his eyes.
Rebecca tuned out their banter and headed off with Mark to deal with business. Tom just hung back in the car,
killing ton his phone as he waited for them to cback.
Meanwhile, from the second-floor café across the street, two men took in the whole scene: Rebecca's uncle
Michael Quinn, and the great-uncle she'd just run into, Miles.
“Honestly, | thought Rebecca was skind of business shark-you made it sound like she was someone you
needed backup to deal with,” Miles said, glancing at Tom, who looked totally chill lounging in the car. “But having
met her, all | see is an innocent rookie. She doesn’t seem cunning or scheming at all.”
“She is a rookie, no doubt,” Michael replied, never denying it. “But behind her stands Amelia, Ryan, and my
dad... and that’s where her real power comes from.”
“Then what?” Miles interrupted him.
Sure, Amelia and Ryan used to be a real headache-he’d taken more than a few beatings from them back in the
day.
But those days are long gone. Amelia hasn't shown up in over twenty years, Ryan’s handed the keys to Guzman
Group's current CEO, and Sebastian? The old man’s already got one foot in the grave.
Taking them out one after another? Piece of cake.
“She’s got too many people watching her back-there’s no way | can touch her,” Michael played the soft card

for once, something you almost never saw from him in front of anyone from the Guzman family.
Miles shot him a second look.
Both of them were as sly as they come.
No way either of them was buying it-they both knew there was a bigger schbehind all that fake humility.
“What, even the mighty Quinn family has someone they can’t deal with now?” Miles put extra emphasis on
“Quinn family,” a hint of mockery in his voice. “You scared off Amelia back when she was unstoppable-that was
no small feat. Handling Rebecca? Man, that’s child's play in comparison.”
“If worst comes to worst, just repeat the stactics you used against Amelia back then. Child's play.”
“Nobody dares lay a finger on anyone Jeffrey’s got in his corner,” Michael replied flatly.
Miles just smiled.
He'd looked into Rebecca-married Jeffrey for five years, had a kid, and spent all that tpampered at hlike
a caged canary. Gifts for her birthday, a pretty nice chunk in the divorce settlement... he’d made sure she
was taken care of.
But so what?
“Yeah, it's not easy to mess with anyone Jeffrey's got his eye on,” Miles said, sounding offhand. “But if we make
sure she’s no longer under his protection, then it gets a whole lot easier.”
Michael looked thoughtful. “So you mean...”
“A man only keeps protecting a woman for one reason—he’s just not bored of her yet,” Miles said, voice rough. “I
checked her out just now-she’s got enough looks to make any guy wanna play hero.”
Michael frowned, not convinced.
He couldn't help feeling that Miles was just talking nonsense.
“Just shove sguy into her life, stir up a little scandal, and get her to sleep with him-easy fix,” Miles scoffed,
sounding all sure of himself. “Once she’s messed around, you really think Jeffrey would still go out of his way for
her?”
‘Honestly, yeah, he would, Michael mused.
That was the first thought that popped into his head.
Going by what Liam had told him, Jeffrey seemed totally crazy about Rebecca.
