Tears streamed down Maja's cheeks in heavy drops as the weight of her predicament bore down on her.
What was she to do? After all the trouble to find her mother, was she to leave her in this cold, dreary basement?
Who could be so cruel? Who was responsible for this?
Her lips tightened, a cold fury settled in her eyes. Never before had she felt such a desire to take someone's life.
"Maja."
lan wrapped his arms around her, feeling utterly helpless.
He had planned for every contingency, but he hadn't expected the stronghold where they held Cynthia to be so impenetrable.
Gunshots still echoed in the background as he lifted Maja into his arms.
She tried to struggle, but her strength was failing her.
"I'm sorry, you need to rest."
With a swift chop to the nape of her neck, lan knocked her out.
Maja's eyes widened in disbelief before she slipped into unconsciousness.
Behind them, Cynthia remained seated behind the door, oblivious to the chaos outside, her detached expression unchanged.
lan signaled to his men with a calm voice.

"Understood."
He had to get Maja out first. The goons from K's outfit were already on their way.
Carrying Maja in his arms, lan made his way outside.
Cynthia sat in the silence of the basement, the two stunned guards already dragged away by others.
The space was quiet again, as it always was for her, a silence that felt as if she was the only person left in the world.
Within the sturdy walls of the basement, over a thousand cameras watched her, like a thousand eyes fixating on her every move.
As the door to the basement closed slowly, Cynthia remained unaware that someone had tried to rescue her, unaware that her
daughter, whom she had worried over, had been there.
lan, carrying Maja, had just stepped out of the basement when a barrage of gunfire met his ears.
His men were returning fire.
Approaching the car, he noticed Patric had cto, his eyes fixing lan with a deep stare.
lan frowned, holding Maja protectively.
Patric chuckled coldly.
"Do you think you can get out of here unscathed?"
"What have you done?" lan demanded.
Patric's lips curled into a smirk as he pointed to his chest.
"I made a deal with K, let him plant a tracker right here."
lan grabbed Patric's collar, anger flashing in his eyes.
"Have you lost your mind, Patric?"
Patric swatted his hand away, defiant.
"Yeah, I've gone mad. lan, how about neither of us leave? Let's stay here on Forbidden Island. It's nice, isn't it?"
He seemed resigned to his fate, unafraid of dying at lan's hands.
lan let go of Patric's collar and grabbed a knife from nearby, slicing open the fabric over Patric's chest.
It looked like lan was determined to find the tracker.
But Patric had buried the tracker close to his heart as a safeguard against lan.
lan wasn't a surgeon. A slip of the knife, and Patric was a dead man.
If Patric died, it meant Eric would be gone forever.
It meant lan would have killed his own elder brother.
Did lan have the guts?
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmPatric taunted, a provocative grin on his face, "Go on, slice open my chest with that knife. lan, don't you remember how much you
owe Eric? If it wasn't for protecting you, he would never have been chosen by the higher-ups, losing his freedom so young. If not
for Maja, he wouldn't have entered that research facility and suffered so. And here you are, in bed with his woman, now even after
his life. You really are his best little brother."
lan's hand trembled, the knife's sharp point pressed against Patric's chest, but he couldn't bring himself to cut.
Patric was right. This body belonged to Eric.
And Eric had never wronged lan.
