So she dared not ask too much, nor did she dare let him introduce his friends to her. She was afraid he'd ask about her friends.
Felix quickly returned to Listina's side, where she had been waiting for him.
"Felix, I'm craving an apple."
He carved her a couple of bunnies, a little trick he used in the past to charm her. He was still a pro at it.
Listina's eyes crinkled into crescents, "How about one more?"
With a flourish of his paring knife, Felix carved out another bunny, a perfect likeness.
But the apple he'd prepared for Carol was just lazily chopped into cubes. He certainly hadn't taken the tto carve animals to
please her back then.
Carol didn't know any of this, believing she was in a romantic relationship with Felix.
By the tMaja finally had a moment to catch up with her, Carol had been "dating" Felix for three months.
Carol sat across from Maja, a smile on her face.
"I can't introduce you just yet. You have no idea how amazing he is."
Maja was indifferent to romance, more interested in her laptop and the designs she was tweaking. When they met for a meal, her
computer was her plus-one.
Carol leaned in close, popping a piece of cheese into Maja's mouth.
"Maja, | heard lan is coming back from abroad. Is it true? You might actually meet your husband in name. Just wonder if he'll bring
his high school sweetheart with him."
Maja's fingers danced on the keyboard, her face composed.
"It's true. Holden's calling him back. As for the sweetheart, | really wouldn't know."
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtCarol munched on fruit, sighing before studying Maja's expression.
"Aren't you upset? | mean, he is technically your husband."
Maja didn't even pause in her typing, "Why would | be? We've never spoken. He might not even recognize me. We got the
certificate because my grandfather pulled sstrings. | went alone. lan left for abroad immediately after."
Carol was irked just thinking about it - who could be so cold, and to disappear for three years?
"He doesn't know what he's missing. Don't fall for him. There are plenty of good-looking guys in our circle. Just pick one and let me
know. I'll tie him up and bring him to you, guaranteed to outshine lan."
Maja blinked away the dryness in her eyes from staying up late with clients. She sipped her coffee and replied with detachment,
"His return has nothing to do with me, but it will be troublesome."
Her grandfather would pressure her, and so would the Pennyfeathers, to charm lan.
Carol grabbed her phone to reply to Felix's message.
"Maja, sometimes you just can't take men too seriously. And who says men are the only ones allowed to play the field? lan's been
the talk of the town with his first love for years. Why stay chaste at hfor that? | have a few clean celebrity numbers. I'll have
them keep you company."
Maja found it amusing, noticing the love bites on Carol's neck - a testament to her recent escapades.
She was curious about this Felix.
Carol had always been quick to fall in love but just as quick to lose interest when it got serious.
Her affections were usually fleeting, but this tseemed different. Three months and they'd taken it to the next level.
Carol, adopting an air of expertise, patted Maja on the shoulder.
"You won't understand the feeling of it until you've been there. The thing about men and women is, you only know if you're
compatible after you've slept together."
Maja, who was bashful by nature, glanced around to make sure no one was eavesdropping before covering Carol's mouth with her
hand.
"Please, less detail. | get it, Felix is amazing."
Carol smirked proudly, her smile unguarded. "You bet, he's top-notch."
Maja knew Carol well; she was head over heels. Raised in a sheltered world, Carol was stubborn when it cto her desires,
always believing she could break through any barrier with her naive optimism.
Maja was different, but it had only been three months. Maybe Carol hadn't gotten tired yet.
So, regarding Felix, Maja chose to keep her thoughts to herself.
After parting with Maja, Carol passed by an adult store in the mall. It was an automated shop, and although she had never bought
such items before, she now felt a sudden urge.
After choosing something incredibly sexy, she sent Felix a text.
[Tonight at my place, I've got a surprise for you.]
She sent the message, feeling thrilled as she returned to her apartment.
Lately, Felix had been busy working and spending twith Listina, squeezing in moments for Carol whenever he could.
She had seen his schedule and knew how hard he worked.
Sometimes she felt sorry for him but didn't know how to help.
Giving him money outright wasn't an option; he would never accept it.
She even suggested buying lottery tickets, but he didn't believe in such luck, convinced that all wins were fixed.
With no way to offer financial help, Carol could only watch Felix struggle.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmShe kept her job at the barbecue restaurant to maintain her cover.
Tonight, she had spruced up her small apartment and hidden in her bedroom, waiting for Felix to arrive.
She expected him by seven or eight, but it wasn't until eleven that she heard the door to the living room open.
Carol quickly hid under the covers on her bed.
