Chapter 382

Nathan had been caught by Knox, and the folks at ByteWise Technologies were still laying low at the

hospital, not daring to pull a fast one in front of the

doctors

But as long as her dad was still kicking, they’d keep saying those gut–wrenching things, and she feared

he might not make it past another two months.

The thought alone made Maja’s eyes well up.

lan had planned to give her a hard time, like only solving Knox’s problem after she completed ten tasks.

But when he looked at her and saw the shattered look on her face, as if she was bearing some colossal

pain. It messed him up.

He whipped out his phone and dialed Jeff.

“Hand over Knox’s criminal records to the police station. I want to see ByteWise Technologies sealed

off by 9 AM tomorrow,” he said and then hung up.

Maja was taken aback. She’d thought he’d just hand over the documents and leave the rest to her to

negotiate with the cops. She hadn’t expected him to handle everything in one fell swoop.

lan glanced at her and asked, “Feeling better?”

Maja was bewildered. When she realized what he meant, her cheeks flushed, and she quickly looked

away.

“Uh huh.”

lan remembered the last time he hadn’t pushed her too far and had stopped when she asked him to.

He couldn’t believe she had forgotten. Standing up, knowing her urgency was because of Nathan, he

felt he didn’t need to be too considerate of her feelings anymore.

“Meet me at the hotel at 8 tonight.”

Maja froze, her fingers clenching involuntarily.

She had injured herself somewhere and had just applied some ointment she had bought from the

hospital after their first time together

She hadn’t expected to need it again.

Hearing that he wanted to do it again tonight, she stiffened instinctively, her palms sweating with fear.

But she had no room to negotiate on this.

Swallowing hard, she said, “Okay.”

“Anything else?”

He was aloof, his gaze drifting away from her.

Maja lowered her eyes, trying to stay calm.

“No, that’s it, Mr. Raymond. You can go back to your work.”

As she was about to leave the room, his voice reached her again.

“You got the hotel room key, right?”

She was the last to leave the room, so the key was with her.

“Uh huh.”

She responded, and just as she was about to leave, he added casually, “Dress up a bit. As a married

woman, you should know what men like.”

Maja felt as if a sharp needle had pierced her heart.

Her face blanched instantly, but she didn’t look back.

After a moment, she rasped, “Okay.”

lan said that just to embarrass her.

To remind her that she was already married and yet was with another man, dressing up to please him

was undignified.

Maja understood this, so after agreeing, she left hastily.

Jeff walked in just as she was getting into the elevator and called out, “Penny.”

Maja quickly put on a smile, “Jeff.”

Jeff nodded, and after entering lan’s office, he blurted out, “I just ran into Penny. She seemed a bit off.”

As he approached lan, he noticed that lan seemed distracted, even holding his paperwork upside

down.

Hearing Jeff’s comment, lan only responded with a noncommittal “Mhm.”

lan continued to read his papers upside down and Jeff was unsure whether to point that out.

After pondering for a while, he decided not to.

After getting in her car, Maja felt a tightness in her chest.

But then she thought, screw it, she had already made a deal, why bother with dignity now.

Thinking about lan’s instructions, she realized she didn’t have the right clothes and would have to go

shopping.

She parked her car in front of a store, and seeing the bright lights, she felt nervous, gripping the

steering wheel tightly; afraid that someone she knew

might show up.

When she got out of the car she kept her head down and hurried into the store.

The store clerk was a middle–aged woman, who brightened at the sight of Maja.

“Miss, what kind of outfit are you looking for?”

Maja was clueless about such things and stammered, “Anything’s fine.”

The clerk scoffed, “You can’t just pick anything. It depends on your boyfriend’s taste. Look at this, it’s

the innocent style. This one’s sexier, and there’s also this fishnet style, very convenient.”

Maja, inexperienced in these matters, blushed at the clerk’s words.

“Then, I’ll take the innocent style.”
