Chapter 377 "Luke, couldn't you just lie quietly in a ditch somewhere?" Vespera stared at Luke like he was a serial killer, every nerve on edge.
He just never stopped. He was always showing up, haunting her like a damn ghost.
Luke's face was grim, and what he said next completely blew her mind.
"Tina was taken." Vespera was still stuck in that annoyed headspace when his words hit her like a bolt of lightning.
"What kind of sick joke is that? Do you think this is a movie or something? That's impossible, she's locked up in holding!" Rebecca cout of the apartment just then.
She'd heard the exchange. "Where did you even hear that? That's absolutely not possible." Luke stepped inside.
He moved fast, Vespera and Rebecca couldn't have stopped him even if they'd wanted to.
"Half an hour ago, someone I had posted in Ashford called me. Tina was being transferred to another holding facility today. During transport, she was ambushed. One officer's dead, another's injured." Both Vespera and Rebecca went dead silent.
A chill ran through their arms and legs.
Luke turned to Rebecca, his expression dark. "I cfor you. I heard you've been working with that boy's family. "You've been going back and forth to Ashford a lot, you've got better access. Ask your contacts in the local PD if they've heard anything." Rebecca snapped out of the shock.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtShe narrowed her eyes. "Are you helping us now? Since when were you such a good guy?" Vespera rubbed her temple. "He doesn't want to help us. He wants information. Tina's escaped, and of course, she's going to clooking for him. He's the love of her life, dear old Luke." "Vespera, I'm worried about you," Luke said, his eyes full of sincerity.
"Worry about yourself. She's way more likely to want to see you." "Fine... She'll cfor us." "There is no us," Vespera snapped, already sick of looking at him.
Rebecca moved aside to make a phone call.
She didn't have direct contacts in the police department, but she did have the number for the Poe siblings, and this was something they needed to know fast.
When she returned, her face was tense. "Enough. We're all on her hit list. None of us is getting out of this. Vera, call Dominic now." Vespera pulled out her phone to make the call.
But just as it started ringing, the sringtone echoed from outside. She took a few steps toward the door and saw Dominic stepping out of the elevator.
He looked at the three of them gathered in the entryway. "Looks like you've all heard." "You knew?" Vespera walked up to him.
"I found out an hour ago." "And you didn't call me?" "I didn't want to scare you. Besides, I figured everyone..." Dominic's eyes flicked to Luke with a trace of mockery, "I would assshe wouldn't show her face this soon." Rebecca cut in, "We're talking about Tina. She's a maniac among maniacs." Dominic waved a hand, motioning for everyone to calm down. Then he took Vespera's hand and led her inside.
Luke saw them holding hands. Even though it made his gut twist with rage, he didn't have the energy to argue about it. Not with Tina on the loose. He had bigger problems.
They all sat down in the living room.
Rebecca looked at the two men now sharing the couch and couldn't help thinking how absurd the whole situation was.
Seriously, as long as people were alive, there was no limit to how ridiculous reality could get.
"Mr. Munoz, any guesses who helped Tina escape?" Dominic said, looking over at Luke.
The way he looked at him, it was clear that he believed Luke already knew the answer. Luke rubbed his temple. "How would I know?" "Oh, con. It's not even a hard guess," Dominic said, turning to Rebecca. "Ms. Snyder, what about you? Any idea?" Rebecca jumped in, "Vera toldonce that Tina had a pretty powerful aunt. She went to her for help before, right? Could it be her?" Vespera added, "Not could definitely." Dominic suddenly seemed to think of something. He turned to Luke.
"You've been spending a lot of twith that woman lately, even handing over her mentally challenged daughter. Looks like... she may like you, but she sure isn't looking out for you." Luke said nothing.
His face darkened, jaw tight, but he didn't respond.
The room went quiet.
This whole situation had caught them all off guard.
No one expected such a drastic, outrageous escape plan, and the real question was, why? What made Tina worth the risk? What value did she have that made Selena go to such extremes? "We could tell the police and have them investigate this woman. Is that an option?" Rebecca asked, sitting back down. A moment later, she stood again to close the balcony door.
Dominic turned to her. "Do you have any proof? Suspicion alone won't get us anywhere." "So, what can we do right now? Just sit around and wait?" she asked, frustrated.
"She's not going to show up, at least not yet. Not because she doesn't want to, but because the person who broke her out isn't going to let her. I've already sent people to track her down. For now, don't panic," Dominic replied calmly.
By now, Vespera had fully calmed down.
And as she thought over Dominic's words, she realized he was probably right. Breaking Tina out just to let her go on a revenge spree? That didn't add up.
Selena wasn't the type to make reckless moves, she never did anything unless there was something in it for her.
Luke looked up. "If you hear anything, could you letknow, too?" Dominic didn't hesitate. "Of course. But I doubt Mr. Munoz will be sitting idle either. Hopefully you find her first, and if you do, I hope you'll return the favor." Luke sat in silence for a moment, then stood up and left. Clearly, he was rattled too.
"Look at him. Back when he and Tina were all lovey-dovey, you'd think nothing could shake him. Now she breaks out, and the guy looks like he saw a ghost. Tch," Rebecca muttered. Vespera didn't comment.
It was complicated.
Dominic stood. "We should get going, too. I'll handle this, she won't get far." Vespera nodded.
Before they left, she reminded Rebecca to lock all the doors and windows.
Once they stepped out of the
apartment and got into the car, Vespera felt a little lightheaded, like her brain was still trying to process the chaos. It was hard to believe any of this had actually happened. She hadn't taken her car, she rode with Dominic.
Gerard was driving.
He looked like he wanted to say something, but held it back. Clearly, he already knew about the escape.
"It's okay. Don't worry anymore," Dominic said gently to her, then told Gerard to lower the privacy divider.
Gerard didn't say a word, he simply pulled the partition down.
Vespera sat quietly, still deep in thought, trying to guess where Tina might have gone. Then she heard Dominic say softly beside her, "Nancy's leaving Halewick tomorrow." "Huh?" Vespera blinked, not quite catching it at first. "Leaving? You kicked her out?"
