Sitting in the car, Eugene glanced over with concern. “Are you sure Amy's boyfriend won'te looking for trouble?”
Sylvia shook her head. “He won't.”
Eugene's brows drew together, his features sharp and sincere. “The guy just screams trouble. If he does try anything, you call me,
alright?”

“No!” Eugene protested immediately. “I hardly ever get into fights—actually, almost never! It just so happens both times you were
there. | saw that guy pick up a chair, and | didn’t even think—I just reacted.”
He really had no idea whether Harry was going after Sylvia or not, but even the slightest chance was enough. There was no way
he'd let her get hurt.
Sylvia focused on the traffic ahead, her tone calm. “I can take care of myself. | know how to look after me.”
Eugene's gaze lingered on her, warm and admiring. “How are you so amazing? You seem to know everything! You say you never
went to school, but your handwriting is beautiful, you understand management, finance—"
He grinned, adding, “And you know self-defense, too!”
The more the spent with her, the more he discovered these little sparks of brilliance—each one surprising him, drawing him in.
For a moment, Sylvia's eyes grew distant. She'd learned all these things from him.
“Just skills to get by,” she said quietly. “Nothing special. People laugh atfor it more often than you'd think.”
Eugene laughed. “Oh,e on. Who could laugh at you when you're this good?”
Sylvia just smiled, letting the silence settle between them.
