Chapter 972
"Evadne, you and Thad, you're not even legally married."
Evadne's pupils contracted sharply, her breath hitched.
"He hasn't proposed, no wedding bells have rung. Not three years ago, not now. Not even a decent diamond ring
to speak of. And yet, he dares to call himself your husband? Laughable."
Avery tenderly took her soft hand, gently kissing the back of it before slipping a shimmering pear-shaped pink
diamond ring onto her finger.
Evadne wanted nothing more than to fling it into the ocean's depths.
But she was paralyzed, allowing Avery to manipulate her as he pleased.
"Thad is too indecisive, too scared to take a step forward or back. A man so feeble and cowardly truly doesn't

deserve you."
Avery pressed her ring-clad hand against his chest, his eyes burning with an almost hysterical fervor, "What he
can't give you, | will. We can have a romantic beach wedding right here on Rose Island, with the local wildlife and
seabirds as our witnesses. | own a vast field of roses here, and I'll pick the most vibrant, fresh ones for you at
dawn. Isn't this the life you've always dreamed of?"
"I have dreamed... but only with Thad by my side!" Evadne glared at him, word by word, "With you, none of this
means anything! Avery, no matter how cunning you are, your heart is a barren wasteland where no roses can
bloom, not now, not ever."
Avery's smile froze, his pale complexion turning even more ghostly, adding an eerie, cold quality to his
demeanor.
Yet, he quickly regained composure, his long, pale fingers reaching for her neck as he leaned in, aiming for the
lips he had dreamt of kissing countless times...
"Mrs. Chambers... Where is she?" Evadne, desperate to avoid his kiss, blurted out.
Avery's heart clenched, pausing abruptly.
Evadne noticed the turmoil behind his glasses, the grief and pain, and pressed on, "What happened to Mrs.
Chambers?!"
"My mother... she passed away," Avery's voice broke with agony.
"When?!" Evadne's head buzzed.
"The day we took off for Rose Island, she left us," Avery's palms turned cold, perhaps out of guilt, as he dared not
meet Evadne's piercing gaze.
But Evadne was sharp.
With them being so close, she caught every flicker of his expression, suddenly realizing something, her chest
heaving with anger, "No... It's not right! Mrs. Chambers didn't fall ill because of what | said, it was you... you
tampered with something behind the scenes!"
Avery feigned astonishment, "Evadne, how could it be me? You know my mother's condition; her body was
failing, the doctors said she wouldn't make it till next year. | wanted to be with her in her final moments... How
could | harm her? She was my mother, my only family!"
The pieces clicked together in Evadne's mind:
"If that were true, you should've flown to the hospital, tried everything to save her.
But you said you were bringing her straight to Rose Island, which means you never intended to save her at all!"
