Marcus asked, “Did you check out this person’s background?”
Gloom replied. We did. She’s clean, not one of Granger’s people.”
Marcus didn’t say anything else, but his hand clenched the stack of documents so hard he was about to make a
hole through the pages.

sure Granger and his gang get what’s coming to them”
Gloom replied, “Before we turn them over to the police, I’ll make sure they get a taste of a living hell”
Marcus nodded, then asked, “How’s things with John?”
Gloom replied, “John’s still clinging to the story that he didn’t mean to kill Cornelia, that he just accidentally hurt
Granny Rebecca and it’s got nothing to do with anyone else. Because he’s been cooperative and didn’t cause a
major fallout, he probably won’t get the death sentence, maybe just 20 to 30 years. If he behaves in prison, he
might even get out early.”
Gloom paused for a few seconds, then said, “President Hartley, do you think we should stir up some public opinion
on this?”
Marcus replied, “No! The less attention this gets the better.”
Marcus remembered when Granny Rebecca was buried and Cornelia mentioned that she wanted to meet the

it impossible to find any evidence.”
Hearing this, Marcus, who was already frail, started to cough violently. He spat out a mouthful of blood.
Gloom quickly yelled, “President Hartley!”
Marcus waved his hand, trying to control his cough, I’m fine.”
