Chapter 286: Provoking Her "Where were you?" Killian demanded the second they walked through the main lodge. I Inez paused and turned to look at Tracy, who had promised her that Killian would still be asleep. However, from the looks of it, the man was very much awake.

"He is stronger than I thought," Tracy muttered under her breath. "I expected that the spell would knock him out nicely for a good ten hours. Never expected that he would wake up so quickly.' Inez rolled her eyes. She should have known better, especially when she sensed his worry through the pack link. Raising her hands in a calming manner, she said to Killian, "I am fine. We just went on a little drive and nothing else." "Finn toldthat you were missing for six hours." Killian countered.

Inez turned silent. She glanced at the beta, who raised his hands in surrender and said to her, "Don't look atlike that. I didn't want to betray you but there is no going against him when he goes all alpha mode." Inez simply rolled her eyes. She didn't believe a word that Finn said to her because she knew that the man wouldn't dare to betray her in a heartbeat if he had to choose between her and Killian.

"I am fine," Inez repeated as she raised her hand and placed it on Killian's bicep. "Calm down, alright?" Of course he knew that he needed to calm the fuck down but he couldn't. He kept remembering the incapacitating fear he had felt when he found out that Inez had followed this witch foolishly and left the territory with her. He couldn't even chase after her because Tracy had cast skind of spell on him which stopped him from leaving the pack. Even Third Eye couldn't do anything.

He told him that the witch who cast a spell this strong must be bloody powerful.

Even her spell doesn't feel right—it's fleeting and dynamic. It changes every second. One moment she was smelling like enchiladas and now she smells ancient, like she had stepped out from a hundred-year-old temple. She smells powerful.

She did. Tracy might be downplaying her powers, but Killian knew that this woman was way too powerful compared to what she was letting on. However, that was not important. What was important was how trusting Inez was. After the betrayal that she received at the hands of Dominic, he thought that she would know better than to trust others without a reason.

When he thought of the things that could happen to her when she was gone...the fear he had felt... he had never felt that kind of fear before. It was the fear of losing something essential to you. Something you knew you wouldn't be happy without.

And that fucking terrified him.

He had known he cared for her. He knew that she was important to him. But he had never cto realise that he had cto the point where he needed her to fucking breathe. Something he did just fine without her all these years long. Had never thought that she would dig her way that deep within him. Oh, he had figured she might burrow her way inside him someday, but never — ever did he think that it would happen so soon.

Killian had avoided putting too much thought into what might lie ahead for them, but he had believed that everything would move at his pace. He figured that with how much he cared for Inez, she was bound to get past his defences. It was only a matter of time. But he thought that he would be in control of that situation. He had thought that she would get there only when he would consciously open that door wide enough for her to enter.

He had been wrong.

She had somehow made herself indelible. She was not quite within his protective walls yet, but she had wedged her way through the crack she had made in them. And now he felt ...really, really threatened. It was stupid. He knew that it was stupid. But no one-not a single soul had ever made themselves as essential as she had done. Not one. He wasn't sure he liked it. Every self-protective instinct was yelling at him to stop this before it got too late.

Maybe he should really start distancing himself from her. If she was going to do what she wanted to do without letting him know or without asking him for his opinion, then Inez might be quite fine without him, right? Even if he pulled away from her? "You are quiet.'

The flatly spoken words after the observation cut through his thoughts; he snapped out of his reverie and realised that the two offer the them were now quite alone. Even Tracy had left the two alone. And Inez was staring at him; her gaze was way too perceptive. Too knowing. Like she could see right through him.

Feeling uncomfortable and exposed, Killian turned to look away. "I was just thinking about how you do not even takeseriously. You knew that I would worry, and yet you left with that witch without lettingknow—" "You want to leave, don't you?" Her accusation was spoken softly. Way too empty of any resentment or judgment, like she was not upset with his desire to step away from her.

Shit. He sucked in a breath and said, "Why would you even ask that?" "I am not asking you. I was stating a fact. Your muscles are bunched up tight. Like someone coiled to spring... and run for the hills." He arched a brow at the taunt. "So, you think after you left with a witch and went missing for hours, I am not supposed to get tense?"

Inez crossed her arms in front of her.

Her eyes narrowed at him. "I know you. And I know that right now, the thing that you want to do at the t moment is get the fuck away from me. Lookin the eye and say that I am wrong."
