Winnie’s heart sank and anxiety took over her.

“What is Xavier’s situation now? Why don’t you just cut to the chase?”

Josiah felt his temples throbbing. “We are still in the middle of the check-up. I didn’t keep you on

tenterhooks on purpose. The outcome is uncertain. He is probably suffering from serious cognitive

impairment.”

“Cognitive impairment?” Winnie quickly went through the words in her mind. She opened her mouth, but

couldn’t find her voice for a while.

She was left dumbstruck for a moment before she threw a barrage of questions.

“Which form of cognitive impairment? Perception? Memory? Or thinking? Unresponsiveness,

hallucinations, memory loss, memory errors, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, Alzheimer’s,

dissociative identity disorder, and mania are all examples of cognitive impairment. Which kind are you

talking about?”

“It’s complicated.” Josiah sighed. “As for now, he’s suffering from mania, dissociative identity disorder,

and memory loss. He has experienced all of these in the past few hours. I can’t explain the details to you

on the phone. Let’s talk about it when you are at the hospital. I have to go and watch him now.”

“All right. Please take good care of him. I’ll be there in no time.”

Winnie came to the station with the police just now, so she didn’t bring a car.

She was in a hurry to get back to the hospital. It was a waste of time to call someone to pick her up, so

she decided to take a taxi.

She was so worried about Xavier’s condition that she completely forgot that there was another person

beside her.

Seeing that Winnie was rushing to leave, Christopher strode forward.

“I believe you didn’t drive here. Let me give you a ride.”

Hearing Christopher’s voice, Winnie realized that she had completely forgotten about him.

The moment Winnie parted her mouth, Christopher knew what she was going to say and interrupted her

straight away, “You’re welcome. Don’t worry too much about it. We are friends. If you need my help, don’t

hesitate to ask for it. Even if you choose to bottle it up, I will still help you when you need it.”

Winnie’s heart warmed up. She nodded at Christopher. “Where is your car?”

“It’s at the front. This way,” Christopher stated and took out the car key from his pocket while striding

toward the parking lot in the courtyard.

Winnie was wearing a long dress and high heels that day, so her walking was not as swift as usual.

In a hurry to get in the car, Winnie accidentally stuck her heel into the gap of the iron bars of the gutter

when she walked over it.

It was a little hard to dislodge the stuck heel, but it could still be done with a little patience and time.

However, they were what Winnie lacked most at the moment. She gave the shoe a jerk twice but still

failed to pull the heel out. In the end, she simply took off the shoe and walked on the ground with her

bare feet.

Christopher looked back and saw the scene. His eyes instantly filled with distress and sadness.

Without saying a word, he strode over to the gutter.

With a yank, he wrenched the high heel that was left behind by Winnie free.

Then he walked over to Winnie and squatted down. Without raising his head, he grabbed her ankle and

said, “Put on the shoe. The ground is dirty.”

Winnie frowned. “I can do it myself.”

Only then did Christopher retract his hand.

After putting on the shoe, Winnie was about to say something when Christopher stood up in front of her.

He was tall and strong. For the first time, Winnie felt the overwhelming presence of his towering figure

when he lowered his eyes to look at her.

Christopher didn’t want to experience this turmoil of emotions. However, whenever he saw Winnie was

willing to hurt herself for the sake of another man, he couldn’t help but feel upset about it.

Even his tone sounded colder than usual. “There is no point for you to be in such a hurry. You are not a

doctor, and you can’t make Xavier better even if you go a minute earlier. You must also take care of

yourself too!”

“I understand.” Winnie calmed down a little. “I was too nervous just now. He sacrificed his life to save me,

or else it would be me who is now lying in the hospital and suffering.”

Christopher nodded in understanding, but at the same time, he was a little regretful. “If only I had been

by your side at the time, maybe it wouldn’t be how it is now.”

Winnie frowned slightly. “You have no obligation to stay by my side. Please don’t say that. Let’s go.”

The two got in the car and arrived at the hospital.

Winnie saw that Christopher wanted to go in with her, so she turned around and stopped in her tracks.

“I can go up by myself. Why don’t you go home and take a rest?”

Christopher stood rooted to the spot. “Why don’t I go up with you and have a look? Who knows, maybe I

can be of help too.”

“What can you do? You’re not a doctor. Besides, I’m afraid your presence will irritate Xavier.”

“Then I’ll wait outside the door. If he lashes out, I can help to subdue him,” Christopher said with a light

smile. “I’m not bragging, but my strength is comparable to a few male doctors’ strength. Let’s go. Come

on, stop dragging your feet here.”

“Okay.” Winnie continued to walk again. Christopher was right; she really shouldn’t waste her time here.

After calling Josiah to confirm the ward number on her way into the hospital, Winnie went straight to the

ward.

Winnie and Christopher bumped into Josiah when they walked out of the elevator.

Josiah was stunned when he saw Christopher behind Winnie. “Uh… Why is Captain Bennett here too?

Are you here to investigate the case?”

“No,” Winnie explained. “It’s hard for me to get a taxi outside of the police station. Christopher sent me

here. Are you going downstairs?”

“Yes, but I won’t go down since you’re here. Let’s go. I’ll take you to see Xavier. By the way, Is Captain

Bennett coming with us too?”

“Yes,” Christopher replied immediately. “I will just wait outside the door. I won’t go in.”

Josiah nodded. “All right. Let’s go.”

He briefed Winnie about Xavier’s current situation on the way.

“The effect of that drug is too potent. Even sedatives can’t suppress it. We’re running out of ways to treat

Xavier right now.”

“Then how did you deal with it? Did you tie him up?”

Josiah was worried to death. “We couldn’t tie him up. No one dared to approach him when he was

having an episode. However, he seemed to have calmed down by himself after we left him alone for a

while. Things went in another direction after that. He couldn’t recognize me anymore.”

“What? Are you saying that he has amnesia?” Winnie knitted her brows tightly.

Josiah’s frown was even tighter than hers. “I’m not entirely sure. He borrowed a mobile phone from me

and was able to recite Louis’ phone number. He even called Louis to talk about matters regarding

Fairchild Corporation. He could recognize Old Mr. Fairchild too. To tell you the truth, our group of doctors

was at our wit’s end to treat him.”

Winnie furrowed her brows. Her heart sank again. If we sum it up in a simple way, it means that he’s

gone crazy, right?

She was crestfallen. “I’ll visit him and see if he remembers me.”
