My dad and Jake were on the couch watching the geating Chinese food. | was fixing my plate checking my
phone often to see if my gran had reached out. It was almost nine-thirty, and I still hadn't heard from her.
“Babe csit down”. Jake spoke.
| grabbed my bottle of water from earlier and took my plate into the living room. | wasn’t interested in the game
playing on the tv so instead | scrolled through my phone whilst eating my dinner.
“Have you heard from your gran yet?”. My dad asked
“Nothing”. | shook my head. “I'm going to eat and then go back over there”. They have to chat some
point, right?
“I'm going to patrol with Carter and Rocco tonight. | could drop in when | leave?”. He asked
“Okay”. | smiled.
| would still go over and check myself. | wouldn't sleep tonight if | didn’t,
“I'm sure everything is fine”. Jake spoke. “They've probably just lost track of tor got held up doing
something”.
“Should | be worried?”. | chewed the inside of my cheek. “I haven't heard from her since earlier today and her
phone is off. Something doesn’t feel right”.
My dad got to his feet taking his plate to the kitchen.
“I'll go over there just now. Why don’t you try calling her again?”. He suggested.

number.
“Maybe George?”. Jake spoke.
Right, of course.
| answered straight away.
“Hello?”.
“Leah, it's George”.
“Are you guys, okay? Is gran, okay?”.
“She’s had a fall but she’s okay. We're at the hospital
now getting checked out”.
“I'll be right over”. | got to my feet taking my plate to the kitchen while searching for my shoes.
“No, sweetheart you don’t need to cdown here.
We'll be hsoon the doctors are just checking her over now”.
“How did she fall?”. | asked.
“She missed the bottom stair, misjudged her footing”.
“But she’s, okay? Theres nothing broken is there?”.
“We don’t know yet the doctors are running stests. I'll call you back as soon as | know more”.
“Okay George thanks for calling”. | ended the call hating the dread seeping into my stomach.
“What's wrong?”. They both asked at the stime.
“My gran had a fall”. | frowned. “She’s in the hospital getting checked out”.
“Is she okay?”. My dad asked
| shrugged. “George is going to call back when he knows more”. | couldn’t stay here and do nothing. | couldn't do
anything at the hospital but at least | could see for myself that she was okay.
“You might want to call your aunt Claire”. Jake suggested.
“I'll call her on the way”. | slipped my feet into my shoes and took Jake's keys off the hook.
“I'm sure George said not to go down there”.
He frowned
“He did”. | nodded. “But she’s my gran and | want to make sure she’s okay”.
“Then we're both going down there. I'll drive”.
He took the keys from my hand. “Jack, do you still want to patrol or are you coming?”.
“Ill take the patrol shift and make sure everything is okay out there. You'll check in?”
His eyes landed on mine.
“Yeah”. | nodded.
| didn’t expect him to come, probably didn’t think it was his place, and | was okay with that. He didn’t want to
overstep.
| grabbed my jacket on the way out but still couldn’t shake the horrible feeling | had in my stomach. She may
have misjudged her footing, or it was something else completely.
Or | was reading into it too much.
| jumped into the passenger seat of his truck and clipped my seatbelt into place. George said she was fine and
yet | couldn't help but think the worst. Jake started the engine and reversed out of the driveway.
“I'm sure she’s fine babe”. He took my hand in his as we took off down the street.
