"Something wrong?" Aurelia tightened her heart a notch. Leopold had been acting off all day. Could he be onto William?

Leopold shimmered his deep eyes ominously under the lamplight, giving him an inscrutable look.

"Have you been keeping something from me?" asked Leopold.

"Nope," Aurelia shook her head, feigning ignorance.

"Really?" Leopold raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced.

"Yes," she nodded assertively. "I'm beat. I'm gonna hit the hay. Make sure the kids don't stay up too late, okay?"

Leopold parted his lips as if to say something more but then closed them, sitting in silence for a moment before standing up and

walking out.

In the next room over...

Kane and William had secretly swapped places.

"Chere, Chirpy." William beckoned, and Chirpy fluttered onto his shoulder, nuzzling his cheek with its fluffy head, "William is

back, William is back."

William broke into a sweat, knowing Chirpy meant he and Kane had switched back, but this was top-secret information.

He made a silly face on purpose. "I just took a quick trip to the loo, that's all."

Skyler sneaked a peek at them, puzzled. Chirpy had never been so chummy with William before. What had changed?

"Ha-ha, ha-ha," Chirpy let out a bizarre chuckle as if to say this gwas a blast.

After splay, the kids retreated to their rooms, gearing up for bedtime. Skyler headed to William's room and eyed him up and

down.

"Got any little secrets with Kane?" he prodded.

"No way," William stammered, shaking his head. "What's up with you, Skyler? You've been acting all weird today?"

"It's notwho's weird, it's you and Kane," Skyler retorted, then reached out suddenly. "You're not wearing a mask, are you?" The

question sent William reeling back in shock.

"Skyler, what are you on about? My face is all soft and cute. How could it be a mask?" he replied.

Skyler chuckled, "I didn't say you're wearing a mask now. I'm guessing you and Kane each made one to impersonate the other like

when Geoffrey pretended to be me."

William internally groaned. Skyler was close to the truth, except the mask-wearing was one-sided.

"Con, let's not spill the beans. Playing the fool is part of your life philosophy, right?"

Skyler pulled a face. "But | wanna get in on the role-play. You guys have such fun without me. Why not invitealong?"

"So who do you wanna be?" William asked.

Skyler pondered, "I'd like to be Geoffrey, but | have no clue what he looks like."

William grinned, "If you could pull him off, you'd wipe out the remnants of AK Group, or you could rule them, turn them from bad to

good."

Skyler shrugged, "Most joined up as hitmen, mercenaries, or fugitives. Bad apples beyond reform."

Dealing with the bad guys meant wiping them out.

With too many humans on the planet, erasing the bad ones saved food and resources.

William darted around his eyes, swiftly changing the subject.

"So, Skyler, what's on the agenda for tomorrow?"

For kids, playtwas serious business. Skyler was the king of play, the ringleader of their little gang.

Scratching his head, Skyler admitted, "Haven't thought it through yet. I'll dream something up while | sleep."

William laughed, "Cool, I'll brainstorm too."

After Skyler left, William tiptoed to Kane's room to spill the beans on their near-exposure.
