Chapter 578 Suspicions
Even Logan sided with Gwendolyn and stood up for her, so there was no way for Xander to argue with her. Hence,
Xander snorted angrily, straightened his suit in a feigned elegant manner, and left Valentino’s room.
As soon as he left, she made up an excuse to dismiss the other housekeepers in the room apart from Logan. “With
so many people coming to the villa today, there’s a whole commotion outside. All of you should go to attend to the
guests. Serve fruits, pastries, and coffee. Don’t allow anyone near this room before the doctors are done checking
on Old Mr. Jenson. Understood?”
“Yes, Mrs. Jenson.”
The housekeepers departed swiftly, and the room instantly felt much more spacious. Apart from the unconscious
Valentino lying on the bed, the only people left were Kieran, Logan, and the Jenson family’s medical corps.
After examining Valentino, Kieran went through the medicine the former had been taking recently. His diagnosis
turned out similar to that of the medical corps’. “I think he ate something that interfered with the medicine, thus
resulting in food poisoning and unconsciousness.”
Since everyone in the room was on the same side, Gwendolyn responded simply, “Logan is the one who usually
takes care of what Grandpa eats. How could he have eaten something like that?”
Logan contemplated for a moment. “I haven’t left Old Mr. Jenson’s side at all. I checked everything he ate, and
everything was edible. On top of that, the cooks we hire are aware of Old Mr. Jenson’s high blood pressure and high
cholesterol, so they’re extremely careful when preparing the food. There shouldn’t have been any issues.”
Everyone in the room went quiet.
For some reason, Gwendolyn suddenly recalled the scene of Xander kneeling at the head of Valentino’s bed earlier
while sobbing.
Although he had been showing his filial piety, she could not help feeling a strong dislike toward him. In fact, she felt
his actions had been very contrived and that he had deliberately cried in front of others for all to see.
As those thoughts crossed her mind, she asked Logan, “Was Xander here when Grandpa had his lunch?”
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtLogan shook his head. “He only came here in the afternoon. He spent some time alone with Old Mr. Jenson reading
in the study. I think they drank a pot of coffee.”
Coffee? She frowned. “Did they eat anything else?”
“I’m not too sure about that. After all, pastries and fruits are available in the study. Since it was a private bonding
time between a grandfather and his grandson, it wasn’t appropriate for me to go in and listen. However, after Old
Mr. Jenson came out of the room, he mentioned he didn’t eat anything. Mr. Jenson also didn’t bring anything with
him today.”
Silence descended over the room again.
Despite what he said, Gwendolyn could not help feeling that something seemed odd. The timing of what happened
to Valentino seemed too much of a coincidence. Alas, there are only a few of us, and we can’t trust a single family
member outside this door. It won’t be an easy task to investigate the matter.
Finally, she said firmly, “It doesn’t appear to be a case of Old Mr. Jenson accidentally eating something he shouldn’t
have. It seems more like someone intended for it to happen. Since it won’t be easy to get to the bottom of this
matter, let’s call the police and have the officers come over to bring everyone who had close contact with Old Mr.
Jenson today back with them for questioning. That way, it’ll be possible to uncover anything suspicious.”
Logan objected. “That won’t do, Mrs. Jenson. If Old Mr. Jenson happens to regain consciousness, he won’t approve
of us making a big deal of it either. Once this matter turns into a case of premeditated murder, the whole family will
be in chaos since Mr. Cedrick isn’t around.”
In truth, she was merely suggesting it without the intention of making things worse. After all, she understood the
stakes involved in the current situation. As long as Cedrick returns, he’ll be the mainstay of the Jenson family, and
these matters will be easy to handle. However, since he’s not around, it’s better to keep things under wraps and
see what the culprit does next.
“Let’s not bother about all that for now. The Jenson family’s medical corps and Kieran will do their best to treat
Grandpa. We’ll wait for Grandpa to regain consciousness first. Perhaps he knows something,” she said.
Logan bowed. “All right, Mrs. Jenson.”
Turning toward Kieran, Gwendolyn expressed her gratitude again. “Thanks, Kieran. I feel at ease with you keeping
an eye on things here.”
“It’s nothing. It’s the least I can do. Don’t worry about Old Mr. Jenson. Leave him to me and get back to whatever
you need to do,” he responded calmly.
She nodded gratefully, then turned and left the master bedroom.
Walking along the corridor, she could hear the din in the downstairs living room.
Walking along the corridor, she could hear the din in the downstairs living room. She had no
idea what the members of the Jenson family were talking about. They were all chattering away loudly.
Although she was on friendly terms with David and Triss, she had no wish to pay any attention to the other family
members.
She turned around again to go upstairs, choosing to lay low. Before she left, she quietly went to see Benedict and
Zendaya on the topmost floor. Since I’m already here, I’d feel guilty if I didn’t go to see the two little ones.
She headed all the way upstairs, but before she could enter the nursery that Valentino had specially done up for the
children, another housekeeper came dashing up the stairs anxiously, coming straight to her.
“Mrs. Jenson, something has happened.”
What exactly is going on recently? I’ve been hearing this a lot lately. Gwendolyn’s expression darkened as
annoyance rose within her. “Cut to the chase. What is it?”
She soon learned that the police station had sent some officers, and they were asking to meet her.
“Me?” Gwendolyn asked suspiciously. Puzzled, she followed the housekeeper downstairs and saw several police
officers waiting at the villa’s entrance.
Seeing her approach, the head of the group of police officers took the initiative to show his badge. “Good day, Mrs.
Jenson. We’ve received a report accusing you of illegally imprisoning a girl from Ospea. Please come with us.”
She instantly realized who was behind the whole thing after hearing those words. “Was it Paul Hall who reported
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmme?”
“Since the missing person is Count Hall’s girlfriend, this is no trifling matter. We’ll need you to come with us to the
station to assist with the investigation.” Well aware that she was Cedrick’s wife, the police officers were
exceptionally polite to her.
I wasn’t expecting this. Not only did Paul not flee, he even secretly plotted all this. He knows there were my men
and Asher’s private forces yesterday. No one could have stopped us if I’d asked to take Annie away. That’s why he
quickly kept out of the way and bit back at the first opportunity. Gwendolyn’s lips curled into a sneer, and she asked
solemnly. “If he accused me of illegally imprisoning someone, where’s the evidence?”
“We’ve sent our men to the Harris family’s old villa on Mount Tranquil and found Annie Steinfeld in the basement, so
we’ve confirmed she was kidnapped and imprisoned. However, we’re still investigating who committed the crime,”
She furrowed her brows, and her voice grew icy as she asked, “Did you let her go?”
The police officers nodded. “Yes. She seems to have suffered severe shock, and her current emotional state is very
unstable. Count Hall has already taken her away.”
Gwendolyn was bereft of words, and anger stirred within her. I finally caught her with great difficulty, but the police
came and messed things up. Because of Paul’s status and Annie’s outstanding acting skills, they let her go just like
that.
Suppressing her rage, she said, “It’s true that I locked her up in the basement. However, she’s not Annie Steinfeld.
The person I locked up is the Harris family’s illegitimate daughter. She was only being punished for a day because
she made a mistake. Is it really necessary to turn it into such a big deal?”
The police officers looked at each other. “Mrs. Jenson, if it’s a family matter, could you show us proof she’s who you
say she is?”
“Of course.”
Seeing how calm she looked, the police officers believed her every word. “In that case, please come with us to the
police station to give a written statement and provide proof.”
“If I prove that she’s the Harris family’s illegitimate daughter, doesn’t that mean you’ll be responsible for bringing
her back to me since you’re the one who let her go before getting your facts straight?” she responded, her tone
carrying a subtle hint of displeasure.
