"Why didn't you call me?" Brandon asked, his voice was pretty chill.

"I didn't dare to," Kent's voice dropped a notch, "The way you reacted back then."

He trailed off, too scared to finish.

"How so?"

Brandon probed.

"It was like," Kent's voice faltered, then as if he was throwing caution to the wind, "you looked like you were about to burst into

tears any second. Who would have the guts to interrupt that?"

Brandon didn't know what to say.

"You might wanna get your eyes checked," Brandon quipped, swiftly changing the subject, "Where's Sophia?"

"She's over at ‘Corner Memories," that DIY shop on the next street," Kent replied.

A crease formed between Brandon's brows. He remembered Sophia coming out of that shop just last night.

"Got it," Brandon said, "Get a move on finding out why Dennis showed up in the West district."

"Will do," Kent responded.

"You go on with your stuff."

Brandon hung up the phone, spun the steering wheel around, and headed for "Corner Memories."

His car soon pulled up outside the DIY shop.

The shop front boasted a huge floor-to-ceiling window that gave a clear view of customers engrossed in their crafts.

There weren't many patrons inside, just a few here and there.

Brandon glanced through the window but didn't spot Sophia.

He frowned slightly, parked the car, got out, and pushed the door open to enter.

"Welcome!"

A pretty salesgirl greeted him with a smile.

Brandon gave her a quick look, his gaze already scanning the interior of the shop. After a sweep, it was clear Sophia wasn't there.

Noticing he seemed to be looking for someone, the clerk couldn't help but ask, "Are you looking for someone, sir?"

"Is this all there is to your work area?" Brandon inquired, his eyes still darting around the shop.

The pretty salesgirl nodded, "Yeah, that's about it."

Brandon gave her another look but didn't press further. He took out his phone and dialed Sophia's number.

Sophia picked up the phone after a few rings.

"Where are you now?" Brandon asked.

Sophia seemed taken aback for a moment, then replied softly, "I'm out and about."

"Where exactly?" Brandon pressed.

"Is something up?" Sophia queried, "I'm kinda tied up with something right now and won't be back until later."

"When can | expect you?" Brandon inquired.

"Probably after ten," Sophia said, her voice mingling with the sound of wind and footsteps, "I really have things to take care of. You

head back and keep an eye on Theresa. She might feel out of place at halone."

Brandon didn't respond.

"Brandon?" Sophia called out after a pause.

"Sophia." Brandon echoed her name, "Just now, in the parking garage, Marian suddenly stoppedusing Yolanda's nand

deliberately showedthat bracelet. | just happened to look up and see the bracelet, that's all, no big deal."

Sophia was silent for a moment, then softly nodded, "Okay."

"Thanks for being willing to explain," Sophia said, her voice tender and grateful.

"If you see something like that again, feel free to cover," Brandon said.

"I" Sophia's voice hesitated, "I just felt like it wasn't quite right forto go over at that moment."

After all, that was Yolanda, someone he had held dear for years.

And the look in Brandon's eyes back then.

Whenever she faced both of them, she always felt like she was muscling in on someone else's turf, and all because of the kid.

So she didn't have the confidence to go over and stake her claim with Yolanda, nor did she see the need.

"There's no such thing as 'not quite right," Brandon stated, "Whenever you want, it's the right time, and you're the only one who

can do it."
