Sloane stared at Whitney's fingers, a flash of cold killing intent flickering in her eyes.

Whitney kept shouting, “You know how to calm a horse with a whistle, yet you went after mine like that. What

the hell were you thinking?!”

“Your horse lost control and almost got someone killed, and you've got the nerve to blsomeone else? If it

weren't for Sloane, who knows how things would've ended today.” Samson jumped down the steps and stood

beside Sloane.

Sloane glanced over and saw Lucas and Benjamin walking toward them as well.

Whitney's face turned bright red after Samson's words. “My horse is a priceless purebred! And she—she’s not

even worth as much as my horse!”

Sloane looked at her coldly. “It’s already dead. What do you wantto do-dig it back up?”

Whitney shouted viciously, “You have to apologize to my horse and pay for a new one!”

Jill had finally cto her senses and pulled away from her brother's arms. Whitney's words made her so furious

her whole face flushed. “Are you out of your mind? Your horse went crazy and started running around—mine

almost threwoff because of it! And now you're flipping the whole thing around? You're insane!”

“If someone kills a person, they pay with their life. If they kill a horse, they still have to pay! If she doesn’t

apologize today, I'm not letting this go!” Whitney shrieked, her voice drawing attention from everyone around.

Before Sloane could respond, Lucas and the others had already arrived. He looked straight at Whitney, his eyes

icy cold. “If that’s how you want to play it, Ms. Whitney, then you'll need to start by compensatingfor the

damage to my ranch-and apologize to my horses.”

When Whitney saw it was Lucas, she was momentarily thrilled-until she realized he walked straight over to

Sloane's side. Jealousy burned through her like wildfire.

Staring at Sloane's flawless face, she gripped her riding crop so tightly her knuckles turned white. She wanted

nothing more than to whip it across that face.

Gritting her teeth, she spat, “Mr. Hawthorne, why are you defending her?”

Jill immediately saw what she was up to. She pointed at Sloane beside her. “This is Sloane Rivers of the Rivers

family-Lucas’s fiancée. Why do you think he’s defending her?”

rage and

She looked at Lucas in disbelief, her voice rising sharply. “Mr. Hawthorne! A woman like her doesn’t deserve you-

she’s not worthy!”

“That's none of your business.” Lucas’s face was stone-cold. “Out of respect for the Houston family, I'll let you

off the hook for the apology. But the damages to my ranch? | expect them at the Hawthorne Group's offices by

noon tomorrow. Miss the deadline, and the cost doubles.”

With that, he didn’t spare her another glance. Instead, he turned to Sloane and gently took her hand. “Your

hand's injured. Lettake you to get it treated.”

Sloane gave a small nod and quietly followed him.

Whitney burned with jealousy, her mind consumed by rage.

While everyone else was off guard, she suddenly raised the riding crop and, filled with venom and spite, lashed it

straight at Sloane's face, shrieking, “You bitch! I'll teach you a lesson today!”

The crop sliced through the air with a vicious whistling sound, headed straight for Sloane's face.

In a split second, Lucas lifted his arm and caught the whip barehanded.

His grip was powerful-veins bulging slightly from the force. The crop was completely immobilized in his hand, as

if welded in place.

Whitney tried to yank it back, but it wouldn't budge.

She looked up at Lucas and saw only ice and fury in his eyes. The look he gave her was like a bucket of freezing

water-her heart plunged into a pit of cold.

Lucas said nothing. His glare said everything.

Then, all at once, he jerked his arm and released the whip.
