The out-of-control whip, propelled by momentum, whipped through the air and lashed squarely across Whitney's
body.
She let out a sharp scream, stumbling back several steps before collapsing to the ground. Her hair was a mess,
and her face was filled with terror and pain.
“If there's a next time, not even the Houston family will be able to protect you,” Lucas said coldly-his voice sharp
enough to freeze the air.
Whitney slumped on the ground, pale as a sheet. Her lips trembled, but she couldn’t manage a single word.
Only then did Sloane retract the needle hidden in her ring. If Lucas hadn't reacted so quickly, Whitney might not
have walked away alive.
Lucas gently applied ointment to Sloane’s hand, his movements careful. “The Houston family’s the second most
powerful in Stonebridge. Hurting Whitney might cause you trouble.”
Sloane's expression stayed calm. “Sooner or later, I'll make sure they realize that messing with me, Sloane, is
trouble too.”
She knew full well-if Lucas hadn't been here today, it wouldn't have ended so cleanly. Not because she feared
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtthe Houston family, but because she still had unfinished business. Plus, she didn’t want to drag Jill into anything.
Lucas knew she could handle herself. He paused and looked at her seriously. “Then go for it.”
Sloane glanced at the hand he’d just bandaged—his technique was smooth and practiced. He clearly wasn’t new
to this.
Lucas turned and poured her a glass of water. “The auction’s all set. So far, the feedback’s been good.”
Sloane took the cup with one hand, sipped, and said confidently, “Of course it is.”
Lucas chuckled softly, eyes full of admiration. “Got anything in mind for the next item?”
Sloane tilted her head and gave him a mysterious smile. “I do, but I'm not telling you yet.”
She didn’t like making big promises until something was actually done.
Lucas raised a brow, his smile widening. “Alright. I'll just wait for the surprise.”

Just then, a noisy commotion cfrom outside. Jill burst in through the door, with Samson failing to stop her.
She rushed to Sloane, face filled with worry. “Sloane, how's your hand?”
Sloane raised her already-bandaged hand. “It’s fine now.”
Jill choked up again. “I was scared to death just now. If it weren't for you, I'd be toast.”
Seeing her crying, Sloane patted her shoulder gently. “It's over now. Don’t be scared.”
Jill wiped her tears and said angrily, “Whitney went way too far. It was clearly her fault, but she flipped the script
like a pro. | heard from my brother she’s vindictive-she might cafter you. You need to be careful.”
Sloane could see she was genuinely worried. She smiled. “Have you ever seen anyone actually manage to bully
me? If she dares to try, I'm not the least bit afraid.”
She didn’t care about the Houston family. She had no ties, no burdens. Worst-case scenario, she'd just burn
them down and walk away.
Lucas noticed the seriousness in her eyes and frowned slightly. Knowing her the way he did, he quickly figured
out what she was thinking-and his dislike for Whitney deepened even
more.
“This Whitney's behavior is no surprise. It all goes back to her brother Xue Li,” Samson said, arms crossed as he
leaned against the wall. “Ever since he wrested control from old Mr. Xue, the whole Houston family’s turned
toxic.”
Benjamin offered a more measured take. “Say what you will, the guy’s ruthless and has no scruples-but he’s
sharp. In just a few years, he’s multiplied their business several times over. Their power in Stonebridge just
keeps growing.”
Jill wasn’t having it. “Word is, he spoils Whitney rotten. No matter what trouble she stirs up, he cleans it up. The
two of them are like snakes from the snest.”
Sloane took mental note of everything but kept a calm face. She glanced at Lucas. “So what? No matter how
untouchable he thinks he is, he wouldn't dare mess with the Hawthorne family lightly. | am still engaged to
Lucas, after all. He'd have to think twice before laying a hand on me, wouldn't he?”
She hadn’t imagined it-Whitney’s hostility was clearly because she liked Lucas. And all this mess had started
because she agreed to this fake engagement for the sake of a business deal. Naturally, he should be the one to
deal with the fallout.

Lucas arched a brow, his expression hard to read as he looked at her.
