Jill burst out laughing. “Exactly. The Houston family might have spower, but even they wouldn't dare act up
in front of Mr. Hawthorne.”
Samson and Benjamin both turned to look at Lucas.
Lucas kept his eyes on Sloane, clearly catching the glint of mischief in hers.
He curled his lips into a faint smile and nodded. “Don’t worry. The Hawthorne family won't let anyone push
around the woman who's going to be our future matriarch.”
Sloane felt instantly uncomfortable. She looked up and met Lucas’s deep, slightly teasing gaze and let out a
quiet scoff.
Benjamin and Samson exchanged looks, both visibly stunned.
They hadn't misheard-Lucas had just called her the future mistress of the Hawthorne family.
Jill, on the other hand, clapped her hands in delight. “Then there’s nothing to be afraid of!”

After parting ways with Jill back on campus, Sloane headed off to the architecture department to ask Professor
Lyan a few questions.
But on the way there, someone stopped her.
Standing in front of her was a tall, elegant senior in the school uniform of a third-year. Though her features were
delicate, there was something about her presence that caught Sloane's attention.
“I'm Natalie.” She glanced at Sloane, frowning. “Did you piss off Whitney?”
Natalie was from the main branch of the Rivers family and had also been on the guest list for the Houston
family’s banquet this year.
Sloane wasn’t sure what Natalie wanted but answered honestly. “I think so.”
Natalie's frown deepened as if she were thoroughly unimpressed. “You're just a neglected daughter from the
main house. So what if you got first place on that special admissions exam? In Stonebridge, the Houston family
could crush you like a bug. And you think the Rivers family would stick their necks out for you? How stupid can
you be?”
Sloane didn’t get angry-because what Natalie said was true. But she had never expected help from the Rivers
family in the first place.

Natalie glared at her, voice sharp and hostile.
“Letwarn you-keep your head down and stop stirring up trouble.”

She'd barely shown up and already unloaded a storm of insults. Even as she turned to leave, she made sure to
throw in a final warning: “Whitney's asking about you all over campus. You better watch yourself.”
Sloane raised an eyebrow as she watched Natalie walk away.
From what she knew, Natalie was never favored in the Rivers family either—a wallflower in her own house.
And yet, her information network seemed pretty impressive.
If Natalie hadn't said anything, Sloane wouldn't have known Whitney had started nosing around the school.
Things were getting more interesting.
But after that day, Whitney never showed up again.
That day also happened to be when the computer science department posted the results for the freshman unit
exam. To get a better understanding of student performance, the department had decided to release the full
rankings.
The moment the results dropped, a flood of students swarmed the university's academic system. It nearly
crashed the server.
But when the rankings finally loaded, there it was-Sloane’s name, sitting at the very top. First place. Full marks.
Which was basically unheard of.
The news exploded across campus. The university forum went into complete meltdown, with thread after thread
popping up like wildfire.
“Sloane didn’t even take the test. This is 100% rigged!” one anonymous account accused, even attaching
supposed proof that Sloane hadn’t been present during the exam.
“A perfect score? Do they think we're idiots?”
“Seriously, she’s just sunwanted daughter from the Rivers family. She probably cheated or pulled strings
somehow. The replies poured in, the forum now filled with cruel and slanderous speculation.

And the rumors only grew worse-with seven falsely accusing her of having an affair with Mr. Samson.
