The night deepened, and moonlight streamed through the gap in the curtains, casting fragmented shadows on
the floor.
Lucas held Sloane in his arms, his mind drifting. He'd only ever seen her as composed and self-reliant, but this
nightmare-what kind of past was she hiding that left her in such torment?
The next morning, sunlight filtered through the curtains and filled the room.
Sloane slowly opened her eyes. Almost instantly, she sensed something was off. Looking down, she saw herself
tightly wrapped around Lucas.
“You're awake,” cLucas’s voice-hoarse, worn-out, clearly from a sleepless night.
Sloane sprang back like she'd been shocked, yanking her arms away and scrambling backward, nearly falling off
the bed.
Lucas caught her by the arm just in time. “Careful.”
“Thanks,” Sloane muttered, lowering her gaze.

Lucas nodded gently, stood up, and headed into the bathroom without another word about the night before.
But even if he didn’t mention it, Sloane already knew she must've lost control again.
Yet something puzzled her-everything in the room was perfectly in order. In the past, whenever she had a
nightmare, she'd wake up to find the room in chaos.
When Lucas emerged from the bathroom, he found Sloane waiting by the door.
She looked up at him, frowning slightly. “Did I... have a nightmare last night?”
Lucas nodded. “Yeah.”
Sloane's brows drew tighter. “How did you calmdown?”
Lucas could tell from her tone that this definitely wasn’t the first time. And judging from the way she asked, the
past episodes must've been much worse.

“I'm not sure,” he said after a pause. His tone was calm and direct. “You were really upset. | just held you so you
wouldn't hurt yourself. Then you started to settle down.”
He deliberately left out the part where she’d bitten him-there was no need to burden her with guilt.
Sloane eyed him skeptically. Clearly, she didn’t buy it completely. Given how violent her outbursts used to be,
this calm aftermath didn’t quite add up.
But she didn’t push it. Lucas had no reason to lie to her.
“Last night... thank you.” She spoke softly, referring to how he had stayed with her all night.
Lucas was about to respond when a voice rang out from the hallway.
“Sloane, are you up?”
It was Jill.
Sloane gave Lucas a quick glance, and he silently returned to the bathroom.
“I'm up,” Sloane called back, quickly smoothing her messy hair before hurrying to open the door.
Jill peered in curiously. “Were you talking to someone just now?”
Sloane lied without blinking, “Oh, | was just on the phone.”
“Oh.” Jill didn't press. She slipped her arm through Sloane’s. “Con, let's go try that new wonton place near
campus. | heard it's amazing.”
“Sure.” Sloane was just glad for an excuse to get Jill out of the apartment-otherwise, Lucas wouldn't be able to
leave.
Jill chirped excitedly as they walked, but Sloane found herself distracted.
She tested the waters. “Hey... Jill, did you hear anything strange last night?”
“Huh? What kind of strange?”
“Like... noises.”
Jill blinked. “Nope. | slept like a rock. Didn't hear a thing. Why? Did you hear something
weird?”

“No,” Sloane said casually. “I just heard someone moved in nearby and their dog’s been barking at night. But
maybe they already moved out if you didn’t hear anything.”
“Ohhh, makes sense.” Jill believed her and didn’t ask further.
Just then, Cameron called Jill's nfrom down the street.
