Marshall's face shifted between light and dark as he tested her. “Sloane, are you serious?”

the space-this so-called “room prepared for her” reeked of perfunctory effort. The bedsheets were still the same
old set; a thin layer of dust coated the vanity; even the window only opened halfway.
She removed the earring from her lobe, twisting it lightly to reveal the tiny listening device inside. From
downstairs, the Rivers family’s voices cthrough, clear as day.
