Chapter 1730 The Strange Number

When she heard Aurora’s comment, Cindy remembered how awkward things had been with Ian at that time.

Now that she thought about it, they were both childish—like two children playing Happy Families.

So, without speaking, she began to slice the vegetables.

On the other hand, Ian answered, “You’re so capable that you never needed my help.”

With an exclamation of incredulity, Aurora began to laugh. “I suppose I must thank you now for your high

estimation of me!” Then, she pulled out her cell phone to change the topic. “By the way, there’s something else I

wanted to talk to you about. Do you recognize this number? It’s a local number that previously called me, but I

didn’t dare to answer it because I was afraid that it was from the media.”

Once Ian went to take the phone from her and looked down at the number, his expression changed.

That was because it was Leah’s number.

It seemed that after being unable to gain anything from him, she turned to Aurora for unknown reasons.

With a frown, Ian cleared the call log with a few taps before saying, “It is a number from the media. Ignore it.

Someone must have hired them; they called me previously and brashly spoke to me. They might try to record your

conversation and use your words out of context for an article.”

Since she didn’t know any better, Aurora only patted her chest after hearing his response and said, “Thank God I

didn’t pick up then! I was thinking that I don’t know enough people locally for them to call me directly, let alone

twice. I knew something was up from the get-go.”

“Indeed,” he agreed. “If any unknown numbers call you in the future, don’t answer any of them. You never know

which of them might be hired members of the media ready to twist your words into something completely unlike

what you meant.”

She obediently nodded. “Alright, I understand. These people are everywhere. There’s one thing I’m curious about,

though—where did they get my number from?”

In truth, this was something that surprised Ian as well. After all, Aurora had changed her number and wasn’t in

contact with anyone but him and Cindy. Her number was never divulged to others either.

It only meant that Leah was absolutely patient in her search for Aurora’s number.

Not knowing what had happened, Cindy placed the cut vegetables into a bowl before heating a pan. “The media is

scary. I never divulged my number when I started working as Ian’s assistant either. Yet, by the second day,

someone found out about it and called me to inform me that they wanted to look for Ian for work.” She laughed at

the memory of it. “I was so shocked that I didn’t know what to say and only kept stammering.”

Back then, she didn’t have much work experience and was a mere assistant. It seemed impossible to her that

anyone would look for her when it came to any work concerning Ian.

Yet, the caller seemed to harbor high hopes and even explained that they merely wanted to have a chat with her.

The prospect scared her so much that Cindy hung up on the caller and blacklisted the number.

In truth, as she later came to understand some of the rules of the industry, she realized that the caller wanted to

grant her some benefits in exchange for some of Ian’s private information.

Fortunately, her ignorance prevented her from giving out any of Ian’s secrets.

Otherwise, there was no saying what she would have done since she desperately needed the money at the time.

As she began to cook, Ian took it as his cue to leave the kitchen.

While remaining at the kitchen doorway, Aurora stared keenly at Cindy before asking in a soft, sly voice, “Tell me

the truth, Cindy. What were you talking about with Ian after you came back? You’re both very odd now.”

Cindy forced the urge to blush as she responded, “What do you mean? We’re acting like we usually do.”

Aurora sniggered. “Don’t bother pretending. I know you’re acting differently than usual, especially when he’s being

particularly sweet toward you.”

As what Cindy expected, Ian’s recent behavior had caught Aurora’s attention.

While she cooked, she kept a straight face and answered, “What else could it be but the fact that he’s made me

again? I told him off after my return and he must have seen that I was really upset and is likely trying to suck up to

me now.”
