“My Beta toldyou're here to apply for a job,” | said curtly.
The woman nodded. “Yes. | heard you're looking for a nanny for your son.” Silver eyes flicked to the bundle in my
arms, and something almost like awe crossed her face before she quickly schooled it. “I thought I'd cin

“Do you have a resume?”
“Well, no, but-"
“Sorry, but I'm only looking for qualified individuals.”
With that, I turned to leave, but the woman called out, “Wait! Please hearout.”
For sreason, the desperation in her voice gavepause. Just for a moment. Just long enough for her to
admit, “I don’t even have an ID. You see, I'm a... a rogue. | want to join Ashclaw pack.”
| turned slowly and looked over the woman. She didn’t appear like any rogue I'd seen before; she was clean-or at
least, now she was, although yesterday was a different story-and well-spoken and had even curtsied and
referred toas “Alpha“.
“You don't act like a rogue,” | said warily.
Freckled cheeks reddened. | swore she almost looked like Ella just then, but | immediately shoved the

“What happened?”
The woman paused. Then: “My house was destroyed and | woke up in the middle of the woods a week
later and a hundred miles away with no pack affiliation.”
Strange. I'd never heard of anything like that happening before. Her wolf must have taken over during whatever
had happened. Perhaps, in her frenzied state, she had accidentally denounced her pack.
“Well,” | said, taking note of the woman's sincere expression, “Ashclaw is open to all, but you have to apply to
join the pack first. You'll have to fill out the proper paperwork and wait for it to be processed,
which can take stime.” | tilted my head, admittedly intrigued by the woman's boldness in coming
here and being so honest. “What's your name?”
“It’s... um...” She bit her lip. “Stella.”
“Stella. Do you have a last name?”
She shook her head and replied quickly, “No. Or at least, | can’t recall.”
Also... odd. | was beginning to wonder if maybe she wasn’t telling the truth when Lilith suddenly swept

“Alpha, if | may,” she said, looking up at me, “I spoke to Miss Stella last night, and she really does seem genuine.
Couldn't you at least let her apply for the job?”
Ah. So that was what this was-Lilith, in all her good-naturedness and her grief, had latched onto a young girl
who looked like Ella and apparently knew Ella as a child. Hell, her nwas even the same, just with two extra
letters. Lilith had loved Ella like a daughter, so it was no wonder that Lilith wanted to give this woman a chance.
For that reason and that reason only, | decided to let her apply for the job.
“Fine. If you want to apply, cback tomorrow morning at eight o'clock sharp. We'll be holding interviews then.
Can you do that?”
Stella nodded vehemently, face splitting into a wide grin. Lilith cleared her throat, and Stella flushed and curtsied
again. “Of course. Thank you, Alpha.”
“I'll see her out,” Lilith said before escorting Stella to the front door.
| watched them go, feeling an odd sensation wash over me. | still swore she looked like Ella, just with slightly
different features.
But whatever strange pang my wolf felt in the lingering ghost thread of my mate bond was surely nothing more
than a pang of grief. Not the bond being tugged by an invisible force.
After all, Ella had just been buried hours ago.
