Chapter 238
A righteous fury bubbled up inat the Beta’s indignant tone. Did he not realize who he was talking to? | was
the Luna of Ashclaw, Alexander's wife, the mother of the Ashclaw heir! | was the fucking wife of the Alpha King,
for Goddess’ sake!
“You will letcomplete my interview,” | barked, opening that siphon deep withinto unleash my Luna
power. “And you will not speak tolike that.”
The Beta’s mouth dropped open, but | didn’t stay to hear his response. | shoved past him with a huff, just as |
had to Gabriel so many times in the past, and began storming toward Alexander's office.
But | didn’t make it out of the parlor.
Because the Beta grabbedby the hair and yankedback so hard that my neck cracked and | fell to the
floor, gasping in pain.
“Who do you think you are, lady?” he snarled, looming overnow. “You're just a rogue. You don’t ever get to
speak to a Beta like that, do you understand?”
My eyes widened as | realized what | had just done. Without meaning to, | had attempted to use my Luna Voice
and my old status to get what | wanted. Only | wasn’t Luna Ella anymore. | was Stella. A random rogue with no
power over anyone.
Just then, a stormy presence swept into the room. | didn’t have to look to know who it was-I could sense

This was likely the part where he grabbedby my ear and threwout on my ass, never to see my son
again.
But to my surprise, he cto stand betweenand the Beta. He wasn’t looking atas he growled, ” Why
did you just lay your hands on this woman?”
| blinked, completely stunned. The Alexander | knew never would have stood up for a random rogue who he
didn’t even know, let alone one who had interrupted a funeral. Either my hunch about his lack of grief was
correct, or he had suddenly beckinder than | expected after my death.
The Beta’s brows shot up. “She’s a rogue, sir. And she was insubordinate. Trying to bossaround and shoving

My neck actually hurt like hell, but | nodded. Alexander waved a hand to dismiss his Beta, then helpedto my
feet. The scent of bourbon and woodfire smoke washed over me, instantly soothing me.
Dammit. Even after everything, his scent was still familiar and comforting as ever.

But this close, | could also see the exhaustion etched into every line on his face now. His eyes were ringed with
dark circles, his cheeks looked gaunt as if he'd lost weight just this week, and his hair, which was normally
perfectly-styled, was slightly mussed. His suit was wrinkled, too, and his tie was done
wrong.
He looked like he had one foot in the grave, which was ironic considering the fact that all ofwas in
one.
“You never cfor your interview earlier,” he said, releasingand putting sspace between us again. “I
had my Beta cfetch you and he said you never answered.”
“I nodded off.” | gestured to the sofa. “He didn’t wake me.”
“Oh.” Alexander furrowed his brow. There was a resigned look about him that made something stir deep within
me, although I pushed it away. “Well, you'll have to cback for your interview another day. | have to put my
son to sleep now.”
Another day? It could be too late by then; Alexander could choose any of the other beautiful women for the
position overnight, when | was the one who needed it the most!
“Letdo it,” | blurted out suddenly.
Alexander looked atin confusion.
“You look exhausted, and Lilith toldhe’s been fussy since he lost his mother,” | said. “Letprove myself
this way in lieu of an interview.”
